Got myself into a pickle when I hit cancel in the middle of a Windows automatic update so that I could save or send a long e-mail. Now I cannot shut down. On the screen are two error boxes One titled Microsoft.NET frameowrk, the other titled Document Viewer.

When I go to Microsoft's Fix It, it tells me that an update is in progress and must complete before it can do anything.

When I get the box to restart the computer, I click restart now, but nothing happens.

When I go to the Start Menu, I can click on shut down, but I have to admit, I haven't stayed around to see where it is getting stuck. I leave and come back and the boxes are still there.

I copied the information in the Microsoft .NET framework box, and although it is long, I am copying it in here below.

Thanks to anyone who can guide me on what to do to fix this situation!!!
BTW - I used to do a lot with C: in the old DOS machines but I haven't done any of that stuff since Windows arrived. Just as bad with cars since catalytic converters arrived -- I am REALLY old!

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

I would try running the chkdsk /r command. Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen and hit Enter. Reboot the system.

The system should run the command before booting into Windows, it will boot into Windows automatically when complete.

Thanks for the advice. As it so happens, last night I decided to start the Windows File Transfer to my new laptop before shutting down and voila, it did something to fix itself so that, when the file transfer ended hours later, there are no more error messages. Yay!
