As far as I know, nothing with my system has changed. This is an Acer Aspire One laptop, connected to a wireless router in the middle of nowhere (eg not likely hacked in by the wireless connection).

I run Zone Alarm Security suite, generally on "medium" settings since I share files between this laptop and my desktop machine (which is fine, btw).
No strange processes, dlls, or other files are running that I can see, checked using Process Explorer.
No new downloads, no strange sites were visited, only remarkable thing was a bot on yahoo IM last night wanting to share her "webcam stripping", which I blocked within 5 minutes.

The problem:
First, clicking on my Opera browser icon didn't work, gives me this error: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Then I tried IE, with the same error.

I tried clicking on other desktop icons, and all gave me the same error above. Even Process Explorer didn't work. Going directly to the program's file, instead of through a "shortcut" gives me the same errors.

I rebooted the machine, and now Opera gives me this error: "Opera has failed to access or upgrade your profile. This may have occurred because your computer has insufficient resources available or because some files are locked by other applications. You may have to restart your computer before Opera will start again."

Now IE works fine or appears to, but Opera still gives me the second error.

I am concerned, because there is possibility of viruses on my machine (some of my downloading habits are a bit risky). I don't understand what happened, I'm not too tech-savvy, and I want to make sure my computer is ok. Especially, that it not cause problems with the three other machines on the network. I'm fairly confident of my desktop being protected, but the other two aren't mine.

I don't know how to check for malware or viruses, except by (updating and then) running Zone Alarm's scans.

I'm not sure what other information would be useful. I would much appreciate any help. My current idea is to just uninstall Opera, delete all associated files, settings, registry keys, related to Opera, and then re-installing it. Assuming that nothing is actually wrong, I would guess that that should repair the problem.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Still working on getting the last program to run. My little laptop isn't terribly fast. From what I can tell, the results so far look just fine, right?

Thanks for the help.

What does seem to be a problem with GMER?

Sorry about the delayed response.

I think it was interference with a Zone Alarm scan that wouldn't respond to cancel requests. I don't like force-shutting down Zone Alarm, so I just let it run overnight. Slow slow laptop, of course it's an atom processor. :)

GMER runs fine now that I could close Zone Alarm properly.

Here's the log file:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

================================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:
