As a longtime XP user I've used to run several antivirus and antispyware programs.
My xp ps always have installed Avira (or Panda Cloud), Ninja Pen Disk, MalwareBytes, SuperantiSpyware and some registry cleaning and disk defrag utilities.

Now I have three new I7 PCs running Windows 7 and I wonder if I still need to hog the system with all those scanners and programs...

It's not hogging the system. You need one resident anti virus app and you can scan weekly or monthly with MalwareBytes and / or Super AntiSpyware. You should also use SpywareBlaster and update it monthly. Ditto defrag.

You should NEVER use registry cleaners on ANY system, regardless of the OS.
