Hello,

I was on a webpage and the java debug console popped open and something ran. I quickly shut off my network connection and tried to shut down my computer. After rebooting, there was a dpc.exe that was trying to run and it would show me a fake virus scan and try to get me to download some software. It looked like the legit Windows Firewall screen, but I'm sure that was a hoax as well.

I was eventually able to run MalwareBytes and that fixed a couple of things and made the computer slightly more responsive. It seemed to end the fake virus scanner. I then did a full scan in safe mode and it caught one more thing. I can include those logs if they are of interest. At this point, the computer doesn't respond well and it looks like the browsers are hosed up. I haven't re-enabled the network connection on it yet.

I have done the DDS/Attach. With GMER, I couldn't hit the save button in Safe Mode due to screen resolution. Out of Safe Mode, the computer runs for a little while and then becomes unresponsive so I cannot provide the results.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the DDS text:

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

I had to run FixTDSS twice. The first time I thought it reported that it found Backdoor.tidserv, but gave me no option to fix it. I ran it again and it said it did NOT find FixTDSS Backdoor.tidserv so I'm not sure why it's telling me anything at all.

Moving on to MalwareBytes now.

Hi, ESET picked up on something in the zipped download, so if you no longer need it, I'd delete it.

Please do the following:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date.
Java™ 6 Update 18 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now.
An update should begin; > follow the prompts.

Clear Java cache

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) If you do not see the icon, look to your left and click 'Switch to Classic View'.
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

I could not run the java update because safe mode won't allow it and it hangs in regular windows.

I was able to clear out the cache and delete the infected zip file.

I reran DDS, but the issues persist. When I boot into regular windows, the services.exe goes up to 70%, explorer takes a long time to show drives, certain programs won't run or take a very long time to start.

Thanks!

Hi

Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.
  • Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
    (you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

  • When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.
  • If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter
  • It will then prompt you for the Administrator's password. If there is no password, simply press enter.
    Otherwise type in the password and then press enter.

  • Next type FIXMBR

  • If it asks if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'
  • Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

Let me know how that goes and if there is any change to how the computer is behaving

No change. services.exe eats up 70-100% of the CPU, windows generally unresponsive.

Did you set these proxy servers?

uProxyServer = hxxp=127.0.0.1:8888;https=127.0.0.1:8888
uProxyOverride = <-loopback>

Please run the following:

  • Please download Speccy from here and save the installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click the file to begin installation and follow the onscreen steps to complete the installation and make sure that the checkbox next to Run Speccy is checked before you click on Finish at the end.
  • Once the program starts it will analyze your system, please be patient as it may take a few moments to complete.
  • Once it finishes and none of the areas say Analyzing click on the File button at the top and select Save Snapshot...
  • Save the file to your desktop and click OK to confirm
  • Go to your desktop and right click on the file you just created and hover over Send to and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Please attach the zip file you just created to your next post.

NEXT

  • Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe. If you run Windows Vista or 7, right click and choose 'Run as Administrator'.
    • If you are asked by Windows to run this program or not, please click 'Yes' or 'Run'.
    • When you see a console window, press any key to continue scanning.
    • Wait while it scans.
    • If your firewall alerts you of Security Check, please press 'Allow' or similar.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically after scan is completed. It will be called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I did not set that proxy.

Looks like Speccy is hanging trying to finish the graphics card information so I can't provide anything from that application.

Is it time to do a full reload? I'm probably about due anyway.

I will try to drop checkup.txt on here, but it won't let me save to a USB drive at the moment...

Here it is:
Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.99.17

Let's get rid of the proxy, then run TFC and a defrag and see if that makes any difference, if not, then it may be time for a reformat, sometimes programs get corrupted after installing/uninstalling, infections etc. and the machine just doesn't run well.

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

DDS::
uProxyServer = hxxp=127.0.0.1:8888;https=127.0.0.1:8888
uProxyOverride = <-loopback>
uURLSearchHooks: {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - <orphaned>
BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - <orphaned>
BHO: {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - <orphaned>
BHO: {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - <orphaned>

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Download TFC to your desktop
Mirror
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.
