Posted 13 July 2011 - 09:35 AM

I've been getting occasional blue screens on boot up (maybe twice a week) 7E errors that point to memory, I've replaced the memory also since installing NIS (Norton Internet Security) occasional blue screens on startup symerror.sys. Whenever I install programs there is a very long pause before the installation starts (like something else is installing in the background)and a lot of my programs are giving keylogger altets (Keyboard Polling as NIS puts it). I'm getting firewall alerts that modules are trying to access the internet (even for programs that aren't running) and other assorted oddities going on with my computer. I've done scans with NIS, Spybot S&D & Malware Bytes with nothing found. I've followed the instructions to run DDS & GMER I'll attach the logs below. I'd really apprectiate if someone could take a look at them for me. I'm having trouble attaching so I'll post this then see if I can add the attached log files. Thanks so much.

I'm getting a firewall popup when I try to attach the files (unrecognized modules trying to access the internet: Adobe Acrobat, and 3 or 4 Open Office modules trying to access the internet, I'm afraid to allow them. Is it ok to copy and paste the text? Thanks. I'll paste them below, sorry if this isn't the proper way, I'm new.

EDIT: Posts merged ~Budapest

Haven't heard anything and was wondering if anyone has had a chance to look at my logs yet? If not any idea how long the usual wait would be? (I know you must have many more people needing help than helpers, just wondering if I fell in between the cracks) Thanks.

EDIT: Please be patient. There are over 350 unanswered topics in this forum at present and the current average wait time to receive help is 14 days. ~Budapest

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Shannon and I will be working with you to remove the malware that is on your machine.

I apologize for the delay in replying to your post, but this forum is extremely busy.

Please Track this topic - On the top right on this tread, click on the Watch Topic button, click on 'Immediate Email Notification', and then click on the Proceed button at the bottom.

Do Not make any changes on your own to the infected computer.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Now, let's look more thoroughly at the infected computer -

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Next, please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.

Hi-

The logs aren't showing any infections so we will keep looking. It looks like you installed NIS in June. What anti-virus/firewall, if any, did you have installed before that?

First, before we start, please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti
When the Jotti page has finished loading, click Jotti's Browse button and navigate to the following files in turn and click the Submit file button within Jotti.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\xpad910.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\samhidb.sys

If Jotti reports that the file has been scanned before and gives you those results, click on the Scan Again button.
To scan the next file, click on the Next File button.
Please post back the results of the scan in your next post. You can just post the links to the reports.
If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal

Next, please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt).

Next, download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.
  • It will also copy the MBR into a file on your desktop - MBR.dat.
In your reply, please give me the results of the Jotti uploads, and copy in the contents of the MiniToolBox and aswMBR reports. Also, let me know about what anti-virus/firewall you had earlier, if any.

The file c:\windows\system32\drivers\xpad910.sys isn't there even with show all files and system files enabled. The other file came out nothing found. I noticed on one file the WINDOWS is capital and the other it isn't. I only see one windows folder, not sure if that makes a difference. I even looked in the folder directly and the xpad910.sys isn't there? Also any time I have to upload a file on a webpage I get a Norton message unknown modules trying to access internet(I think it's firewall) and one of them was adobe and about 3 or 4 were something to do with Open Office, if I don't allow them I get a page not found message, I allowed them this time to get the scan done (the only option was always allow, hope that was ok). I'll work on the other things you requested, thanks again so much for all your help.

I think that was everything, didn't know what to do with the MBR.dat. If I missed anything please let me know. AND, thanks again, really appreciate your help (VERY MUCH!).

Hi-

I am still not seeing any infections. I am beginning to think that NIS is set too tight. Double click on the NIS icon in the system tray to open the console screen. Click on the first tab - Settings. At the bottom of the Settings screen, click on Default All and the Yes.

Let me know if that changes anything in the computer's behavior.

It's been acting strange for quite a while, long before installing NIS. I'm also getting keylogger alerts for lots of programs and in the reports for NIS LOTS of programs "preparing to access the internet" maybe I'm just paranoid. I've also switched to Chrome because Firefox was doing a lot of strange things. So, it doesn't appear to you that there is anything going on by the logs?

Hi-

Export the NIS Firewall - Activity report and send it to me. Explain more about the strangeness that you have experienced.

Tried to attach the file, get a message "you aren't permitted to upload this kind of file", almost every program I launch comes up with an entry "preparing to access the internet" most have no reason to do that. Could I send it by email to you?
