Hi,

This thread is a continuation from this topic here.

Attached are the log files :)

The attached Ark.log file is actually the initial 'quick scan' described in the GMER step in the Preparation Guide. Upon scanning the ticked boxes (with unchecked "IAT/EAT", "Drives/Partition" and "Show All"), GMER keeps closing itself down. GMER.exe no longer works after that so I keep extracting and renaming new ones to keep trying, with no success.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you!

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

First, I need to know if you still need help! To tell me this, please click on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/409273 and follow the instructions there. If you do not still need help, this is all you need to do. If you do need help please continue below.

***************************************************

If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi again,

1. This problem is still unresolved. It seems to be a Trojandropper:win32/sirefef.B [microsoft] issue, with Google searches re-directing to random search sites (on firefox and chrome browsers). All EXE files of known scanners, anti-virus, malware removers seem to get infected and replaced by this trojan - so earlier attempts of removal has been rather difficult.

2. Here are the log files again

Hello frikt!
:welcome: to BC!

Looks a you're computer caught a Rootkit.

It looks as ComboFix has been run on that computer.
Powerful tools like ComboFix shouldn't be run unsupervised, doing so might severely cripple the basic functions on the computer.
Please refrain from doing so.

Why has ComboFix been run on that computer?

Now that it has please post the content of C:\ComboFix.txt in your reply.

To gather some information on that rootkit a coule of other scans are needed. Just follow the steps below.

Step 1.
aswMBR:

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Right-click the aswMBR.exe and choose run as administrator

Posted Image

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Step 2.
RKU:

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now right-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and choose run as administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Step 3.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • Answer to the question in the beginning of this post.
  • The content of C:\ComboFix.txt
  • The content of the log from aswMBR in step 1.
  • The content of the log from RKU in step 2.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

I'd like you to run a couple of scans to collect some more information before we tackle this one.
But first a couple of questions I'd like you to answer please.

From where did you download ComboFix?
Why was it run in Safemode (without network)?

Step 1.
DDS:

Please delete your current copy of DDS.scr

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------

Please include the following logs in your thread:
  • Contents of the DDS.txt posted as text in your reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt to your post by clicking the Manage Attachments button under Additonal Options>Attach Files on the composition page. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Upload.

Step 2.
Systemlookup:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems /sub

    :filefind
    consrv.dll
    winsrv.dll

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Step 3.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • Answers to the questions in the beginning of this post.
  • The logs from DDS in step 1.
  • The content of SystemLook.txt from step 2.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Hi,

1.
a. I can't remember where i downloaded combofix anymore, but it's definitely not from this site.
b. Previously, I was running a few scanning tools in safemode without network because the trojan was (is still!) blocking all scanning EXEs and I thought i could circumnavigate by blocking all internet connections and running in safemode. That clearly didn't solve the problem!

2.
Weirdly enough, I know I have run DDS before (see 1st post), but this time around, DDS doesn't seem to be running anymore (old copy deleted, new copy(ies) downloaded from your post. I click, and it just stays at the following prompt indefinitely (I've tried several attempts, on the different links, even after reboots).

---

As per the instructions you would have received, kindly ensure any onboard
script blocking tools have been disabled for they shall interfere with DDS.

DDS is a non-invasive diagnostic tool.

- DDS makes no registry writes/changes

- DDS does not create any permanent files/folders.

This scan should not take longer than three minutes to complete.

When the scan is complete, a logfile/report shall pop open.

Post the contents of the logfile to the forum where it was requested

Systemlookup seems to close itself after a few minutes of scanning, since there was no 'notepad window' popping up after the scan. Luckily, the log file was made on the desktop as you have specified.

Reboots won't change things to the better.
Use right click and chose run as administrator.

The log from SystemLook is incomplete.
Please post the content of the whole log.
If that was the whole log use right-click and chose run as administrator on SystemLook as well and post the log.

There is some information needed before we proceed to tackle this infection
Let's use another tool as well.

Step 1.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Right-click on the icon and chose run as administrator to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Standard Output.
  • Underneath the option Extra Registry change it to Use SafeList.
  • Underneath the option File Scans set the File Age to 30 Days
  • Underneath the option File Scans check the boxes beside Use Company Name WhiteList, Skip Microsoft Files, Use No-Company Name WhiteList, LOP Check, Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Step 2.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • The logs from DDS (if any)
  • The complete log from SystemLook
  • The content of the OTL.txt and Extras.txt from step 1.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Upon ticking the options you've specified and Scanning using OTL, the program exits. Again, at right-clicking, since it's a .scr file, there is no "run as administrator" option.

Thank you!

Let's use ComboFix, but this time downloaded from a proper location.

Please delete your current copy of ComboFix. (C:\bxvx\setups\ComboFix.exe)

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Edited by heir, 06 August 2011 - 12:36 PM.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Let's continue then

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Rootkit::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\1252105077.sys
File::
c:\windows\system32\8138AE09.exe
c:\windows\system32\8190.tmp
c:\users\Norazhar\AppData\Local\Temp\CFcatchme.sys
Driver::
8138AE09
MEMSWEEP2
CFcatchme

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Looking better!

Step 1.
Uninstall unwanted programs:

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

µTorrent

Optional removals
µTorrent and P2P programs in general are legal themselves, but much of the content downloaded with them is downloaded illegally. They are also a great way to infect yourself with malware.
It's up to you if you want to remove the above programs, however I recommend you do.

Step 2.
CKScanner:

Download CKScanner from here

Important : Save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify that the file is saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Step 3.
MBAM:

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 4.
Online Scanner:

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Step 5.
Things I would like to see in your reply:

  • The content of CKFiles.txt from step 2.
  • The content of the log from MBAM in step 3
  • The content of the log from EOS in step 4.
  • Information on how your computer is running after those steps..

Edited by heir, 07 August 2011 - 02:50 AM.

Please do not PM me asking for support. Post on the forums instead.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!
