What first alerted me to the problem was that I had all these mailer-daemon messages in my inbox, about 40 of them. Some were from about 12:30 this morning, others were from about 8:10 tonight. Turns out, I had been sending to my entire address book (everyone I've sent an e-mail to--I never clean it out) spam links. A lot of them were coming back because of outdated e-mail addresses. Some I remembered having sent to before, others not. Anyway, I checked, and there was nothing in my outbox. I deleted all my contacts and changed my password, but I got a handful more returned e-mail errors about twenty minutes later. So I went to my school e-mail, that I had sent to from my personal account in the past, and there were two spam messages in there from my personal account. This happened to my parents (same computer) twice a few months back, but this is the first time it's affected my account.

We do get malware on occasion, but I think it might be from when I would try to watch streaming TV shows on some shady sites. I've tried to stay away from those, and it tends to work. I'm honestly considering just deleting my AOL account (yes, we still use AOL) and going over to Gmail or something.

Anyway, I did a quick scan with Malware Bytes, which I generally use. Nothing. Help, please?

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Anyway, I checked, and there was nothing in my outbox

Most likely it's not you sending those emails, but someone, whose computer is infected and who has your email address in their address book.

In any case, we can run some checks...

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Sorry, only just saw your response. Actually, the reason I came back to this thread was because my parents' account sent out spam again last night. My uncle told me to run SUPERAntiSpyware, and it found 4 things it identified as "Trojan.Agent" (plus a bunch of tracking cookies). Can't find a log to paste, so I'll just list the findings:

Trojan.Agent/Gen-IExplorer[Fake]
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-4105E587B6\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\RARSFX0\NIRD\IEXPLORE.EXE
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-4105E587B6\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\RARSFX1\NIRD\IEXPLORE.EXE
Trojan.Agent/Gen-PEC
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-4105E587B6\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\RARSFX0\PROCS\EXPLORER.EXE
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER.YOUR-4105E587B6\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\RARSFX1\PROCS\EXPLORER.EXE

And here's the ESET report:

C:\Program Files\Search Toolbar\SearchToolbar.dll Win32/Toolbar.Zugo application cleaned by deleting - quarantined

We haven't had any spamming issues for around 24 hours, but that doesn't mean it's gone--would you say we're out of the woods with regard to these virus e-mails? Is there anything else I should try, or do you think these files were the culprit?

Thanks,
Lauren

my parents' account sent out spam again last night

Is this the same computer we've been working on here?

Yes, we share a computer, and so far have had issues with my e-mail account and theirs. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm little bit confused...
Are you saying that your account has been spam free after changing password, but still something has been sent from your parents account?
If so, do they have that spam in outbox folder?
Did they try to change their email password?
What email program(s) are we talking about here?

I changed my password Tuesday night after I got all those returned e-mails, then got another handful more after changing the password. I don't know if they were just delayed, or more spam was sent. Nothing in the outbox. I think the virus may have deleted the spam messages from the outbox, though (if it's capable of that), because they were definitely sent. This was the first time I have had any issues with my account. My parents' account has sent spam a few times before, about a month or two ago. After running MalwareBytes and Spybot and finding nothing at the time, we chose the "ignore it and hope it goes away" approach, which seems not to have worked. Two nights ago, all their contacts got spammed again. They have nothing in the outbox folder. They have not changed their password, but I'll try to make that happen (EDIT: Just changed password on parents' account). We have AOL for e-mail, and browse with Opera, if it matters.

Hope that's clear enough. If not, just tell me what else you need to know. B)

Clear :)

I still doubt this is about your computer...

Let's try one more thing...

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

Let me know if more spam will be sent.

================================================================

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.
