My computer may have become infected while I was using a browser to research the many “svchost.exe processes” that appear on the Windows Task Manager. The computer has been running more slowly than in the past and I wanted to know more about the processes currently running.

On July 7, I tried to access a link that claimed to give a report on svchost.exe. Nothing happened but almost immediately I was subjected to the “Windows XP Fix” virus. The computer shut down and rebooted. I didn’t know that it was a virus at the time. I tried to buy the “fix” but couldn’t because I was disconnected from the internet. I accessed the internet and being suspicious, checked out “XP Fix” and discovered its true status.

Last fall, my computer got the “Postal Virus”. I replaced my Registry with an older version and that seemed to get rid of it. So when getting the “XP Fix” virus I tried the same approach – loading the Registry of 07/01/11. I was able then to boot up my computer ok. However later that evening I tried doing some browser research (on IRAs) and kept getting redirected to different websites (feed company among others). Upon checking that out, I discovered that I was subject to what I now know is the “TDSS Rootkit” virus. I guess that it is also called the “Browser Hijacking” virus.

I now get a number of different pop up messages that I never got before. Also, I maintain an old Paradox Application and its “working” folder which contains all my tables, forms, reports; etc has been cleaned out twice (though not the last several times I checked). I’d backed it up duplicate copies to flash drives and had been able to reestablish everything each time the files were erased.

In “safely” disconnecting the flash drives, however, I now get a message that it cannot be done “because a program is still accessing it”. Before this virus, I never got a message like that.

After accessing a web site, the window will close on occasion without any action on my part. This happened a few minutes ago while I was trying to post this problem.

I was led to the Bleeping Computer site by a posting of a user which stated that after many attempts elsewhere, her “Browser Hijacking” problem was licked via Bleeping Computer and ComboFix.

I’ve determined that my Windows XP Firewall is been enabled. So far, I haven’t added any “exceptions” to the firewall other than those that already existed. I subscribe to the McAfee Virus Scan Plus. A full scan done recently revealed no items of concern.

I’ve disabled any CD Emulation software I have and also (I believe) did all the other “preparation” steps you outlined.

GMER scanned automatically without any warning about rootkit activity. The scanning showed that IAT/EAT was checked, of the drives, only “C” drive was checked, “Show All” was not checked.

Hello Gringo:
Infected with TDSS Rootkit and possibly with Windows XP Fix

Thanks so much for your help.

I have now enabled the “Instant Notification”. I thought I had done so before, but obviously hadn’t. I did check my posting early on the 17th but not since then. I did log into BleepingComputer every day since but noting that I had no personal messages was under the assumption that there were no replies yet. I’ll make sure to check directly several times a day from now on.

Everything you suggested has been done. Below is the copy of the “Rootkit Unhooker” report. By the way the last line of the log (!!POSSIBLE ROOTKIT ACTIVITY DETECTED!! =) was missing from the report, so I copied it onto the report.

The two DDS text items are attached.

The main problem I’ve had recently is that a window will close on me without any action on my part. In fact I had almost completed this posting (twice in fact) and it disappeared both times. I’ve drafted this first onto Word as a precaution.

I know I might eventually need the “Windows Recovery Console” and hadn’t it on my computer or on a Recovery CD so I downloaded it – was stopped out mid download the first time I tried – but eventually got it down. Of course I won’t do anything with it until and unless directed.

Thanks again.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo:

Thank you for your quick response.

I successfully ran ComboFix and the log is posted below. I had no problems in running it. As I mentioned in my earlier post I had downloaded the Windows Recovery Console previously. I followed the ComboFix instructions in the “If you use Windows XP and do not have the Windows CD” section of the ComboFix Instructions and ComboFix successfully installed the Console.

After running ComboFix, my Juno dial up didn’t respond so following instructions in ComboFix I rebooted the computer. It still didn’t respond (I may have rushed things) but a Juno error message appeared telling me to reboot. I did so and Juno started up ok.

Among the messages I’d been receiving since the infection is one from Windows Internet Explorer saying “Access is Denied” when I try to “Set As Background” (to my desktop) the daily Astronomy Picture of the Day from NASA. I just now tried it again and I still get the “Access in Denied” message.

So far I haven’t gotten any of the other unusual messages that have popped up since the infection started.

Shortly after I had started getting the “problems” with the viruses, I connected my two flash drives to back up my data files. Could they now be infected? Should I do something in that regard?

Best regards
John Bonney

Gringo:

Just a couple items - I don't know if they are important or not.

I couldn't access Bleeping Computer this morning. I kept getting the Internet Explorer - version 8 error message. I could access any other site that I tried.

I mentioned in my first posting that in trying to "safely" remove a flash drive I'd been getting the message "the device cannot be stopped a program is still accessing it". I still get that message.

I've been getting some of the other pop up messages that started occuring since the infection.

For some time now, my browsers have been working ok - I haven't been redirected at all. Nor have I been subjected to any of the Windows Fix messages.

Hello Gringo:

I had some problems, if I fouled anything up, I’ll be quick to redo it.

I was able to uninstall the J2SE Runtime and the McAfee Security Scan Plus ok but the Screensavers Installer Version 3 did not appear in the “Add or Delete Programs”. In checking via Windows Explorer I had noted that there was a Screensavers.com folder and I was going to comment on it – but I see that MBAM took care of it. I did run a search on “Screensaver Installer Version 3” and that line appeared in “Attach.Txt” (of which you are doubtless aware) and also in 243 text files called “spuninst” which can be opened with notepad. They are all Windows files and are in various folders with names like $NT UninstallKBxx.

I had some problems with downloading Java but eventually got it to install and run ok. TFC ran well and I was prompted to reboot.

I had the most problem with MBAM. It kept giving me a partial download (two to three MB out of nine) with the message “download complete”. The source site was “TechSpot”. Was this a misdirection? I finally tried downloading it via my ancient (and uninfected) laptop and it downloaded ok. I’d noted that download site was different on the laptop from the one on the PC. I transferred over to my PC desktop via a flash drive. .

Everything ran ok, but I did get an error message – before the quick scan. The message read. “An error hads occurred. Please report this error code to our support team: PROGRAM-ERROR-UPDATING (11004,0, No address found) “The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but itr does not have the correct associated data being resolved for.”

The Log is copied below.

I decided to download the “Hi-Jack This” via the laptop also. I got it transferred to the PC ok and ran it as directed. The log is also pasted below.

One thing I failed to do was to keep connected with the Internet while running MBAM – so no updates were possible.

John

Gringo:

One minor thing more. Those 243 files with the line "Screensavers Installer Version 3" were all dated between December 12, 2007 and June 22, 2011 before (I think) my computer infection occurred.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe

Gringo:

[size="2"]I guess I’ve failed so far.

Thanks for the list of start up items that could be disabled. I agree with the list and have done the “Fix Checked” on them.

I haven’t been able to get the ESET scanning done. Been trying all day but haven’t been able to get beyond the START that comes after the “Accept Terms”. I get the blue screen and it appears stall then and there.

I’ve disabled all pop up blockers and have reviewed the ESET Help regards the “Information Bar” – but the Information Bar doesn’t appear at all.

I’ve even tried to run ESET on my laptop but I get stalled in the same area there too.

Maybe it is the heavy demand for this scan that is blocking me – but if there are any hints you could give me, I’d sure appreciate them. Meanwhile I’ll continue trying

Gringo:

I run into problems with F-Secure. It loads but the toolbar has these messages: “Done but with errors on page” and then “Error on Page”.

I get no message concerning “activex control”. The button there to push says “Run Check” I push it and a pop up message reads “Pop Up Security Information” “The Applications digital signature has been verified, Do you want to run the application?” There is a “Run” button to push.

Next comes up a pop up that reads “Warning Security” “The publisher cannot be verified by a trusted source . Code will be treated as unsigned” and then this wording: “Java.10.file not found Exception C:\Documents and Settings\John Bonney\Application data\Sun\Java\Deployment\Security\Trusted certs\ (ACCESS IS DENIED)

There is an “OK” button to push. I push it and the first pop up reappears. I push “Run” again and the the second pop up reappears. I push “OK” again and the first pop up appears for the 3rd time. I push “Run” again and the scanner starts running but then a message appears “If you want to run F-Secure online scanner, restart your web browser and return to this page” and there is a “Try Again” button that returns the same “If you want …” message.

My browser is the Internet Explorer version 8 by the way.

The statement below is at the bottom of the F-Secure page:

“JavaScript needs to be enabled, and you need to have at least Version 6 Update 10 of Java Runtime Environment installed.
Note: If JavaScript was disabled for security reasons, please remember to restore your original settings after scanning.”

I tried the ESET again but got the same results as before.

John
