I am having an issue with the printer spooler, specifically I can't print anything from my machine. After spending time on the phone with HP support, we were able to find a temporary workaround with printing directly to the printer. However, some functionality is lost (i.e. double sided printing) and it's not a long term solution.

Here are the details:

Computer is a Dell Vostro 220

Operating system is Windows Vista Business 32 bit

Printer is a HP Photosmart C309a

The printer is connected via USB

When trying to print from Word, Excel, Outlook even Notepad the printer loads up the doc and says it is printing. It just seems to freeze and the machine starts running very slow. The task manager shows CPU usage near 100% sometimes when I only have 1-2 programs open. Sometimes the machine crashes all together and restarts. A restart is the only way to clear the printer.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software multiple times. HP support walked me through starting and stopping the printer spooler but that did not work either. HP seemed to think the spooler issue is related to vista. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
