Help please, my anti-spyware (super Antispyware Pro), anti-malware (Malwarebytes), anti-virus (McAfee) programs are not finding what's going on. I cannot update any of these programs - the installation gets blocked every time. Even somewhat benign programs like my Blackberry Swiss-Army Knife aren't loading. Super Antispyware was locking up my system each time I started up my system (even with disabling from Start menu) so I uninstalled that program but had to go thru my system and force uninstall a number of remaining files from that program. Malwarebytes has done the same thing since my most recent update (6/28).

When I updated HiJackThis (from 2.0.2) and tried to run the new version 2.0.4 I got the following message:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in the file, hijack this may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter. Find the line(s) Hijack This reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes), and reboot. For Vista simply exit HijackThis, right click on the icon and choose 'Run as Administrator'

When I go to the newer version of HijackThis desktop icon and right click, the option to run as administrator isn't there. I AM the administrator on the system but it's not allowing me under my current (unrestricted) user name to run this. I was able to delete these hosts files thru notepad and was able to successfully update the HijackThis version.

This is my log from the scan:

Please help. Short of wiping the entire system and reloading everything again I'm not sure where else to look/what else to do.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you!

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

First, I need to know if you still need help! To tell me this, please click on http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/409176 and follow the instructions there. If you do not still need help, this is all you need to do. If you do need help please continue below.

***************************************************

If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

The one issue I still see happening is Outlook or Firefox tend to be "not responding" often. No idea why. I have minimal programs running in the background. I know that when my McAfee is scanning it slows the system but this occurs when McAfee isn't scanning more often than not.

Other than that I think the system is running better - at least I don't feel like I have as many issues as I initially did.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RIMBBLaunchAgent.exe] C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers\RIMBBLaunchAgent.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Real\RealPlayer\Update\realsched.exe" -osboot
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "D:\iTunesHelper.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tvncontrol] "C:\Program Files (x86)\TightVNC\tvnserver.exe" -controlservice -slave
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ehTray.exe] C:\Windows\ehome\ehTray.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe" -scheduler
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Jump Desktop] C:\Program Files (x86)\Jump Desktop\JumpDesktop.exe
      O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [WinCalendarV3] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sapro Systems WinCalendarV3\WinCalendarV3_SysTray.exe" /q /c (User 'SYSTEM')
      O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [WinCalendarV3] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sapro Systems WinCalendarV3\WinCalendarV3_SysTray.exe" /q /c (User 'Default user')
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

If you have any problems running Hijackthis.

sometimes we have to run it like this To run HijackThis as an administrator,
rightclick HijackThis.exe (located: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)
and select to run as administrator

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on copy to clipboard and paste the results here in this topic
  • you may also find here C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Quick question before I fix these programs that start with start-up. If I disable the Jump Desktop and tvnserver I'll have to go in an open these manually each time I turn on my system correct? I do remotely access my computer from my ipad and that's what these programs are for. Do you still suggest I take those off start-up?

These are only suggestions that don't need to run

If you want them to run then by all means leave them running and go down to the next one

Ran ESET scanner but when it finally finished all it said was 'No Threats Found' I looked for a log but my system didn't find one.
