Hi

I had the xp security 2012 malware on my computer. I went on this site and found directions to remove it, which I did. I ran Fixncr.reg then RKill, iexplore.exe and then ran a full scan with malwarebytes. However now I can't run FireFox when I try to the 'Open with' screen pops up and ask me which program I want to use to open the file. I've also gotten a message stating that rundll32.exe can't be found. I also can't run any other executible files. I followed the instructions in the preparation guide on this site as best I could, but I couldn't run the Defogger or gmer programs because of this issue. Below are the dds logs I was able to run. Overall my computer is really acting up now. It keeps freezing and programs stop responding. Hopefully this will go through! Thanks! Cris

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Run exeHelper
Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Hi!

Do you plan on using McAfee or Symantec as your Anti-Virus program?

Let me know how things are running in your next reply.

GooredFix
Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Hi,

Below are the logs. I was going to use Symantec. I had McAfee when I bought my computer but I didn't renew it. I also was thinking of just buying Malware Bytes as well. My side of the computer is working pretty well. But when I log in as my husband I still can't get programs to run.

Thanks!

Hi!

Thanks for that information!

Do you have an active subscription to Norton? I'll provide instructions for removing McAfee below.

Lets try a more powerful tool and see what issues you're dealing with after running it.

Remove McAfee Tool
Please download the McAfee removal tool from HERE
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Make sure all McAfee application windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe and the removal tool will start automatically.
  • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator.
Once the removal tool is finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. If you choose to restart later, your McAfee product will not be fully removed until you do.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.

NEXT:

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hi,

I ran the MCPR and also tried to run the combo fix.I didn't have the recovery console so it downloaded that. But it seemed to have stalled somewhere, the cursor stopped blinking and the computer froze, probably after 25 min or so. I had to re-start the computer. I know you said not to re-run combofix so I didn't. So what should I do now? Also, btw my automatic updates started when I rebooted my computer but it keeps stating that the updates are failing. Does that mean anything? See below:

Installing Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB2562937) (update 1 of 21)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Windows XP (KB2566454) (update 2 of 21)... failed!
Installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2559049) (update 3 of 21)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Windows XP (KB2555917) (update 4 of 21)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2544521) (update 5 of 21)... failed!
Installing Update for Windows XP (KB2541763) (update 6 of 21)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2539636) (update 7 of 21)...

Thanks!

Hi crisrug!

Sorry to hear you experienced issues with the previous instructions.

Lets try running a different tool first, and see if that lets us run a scan with ComboFix successfully.

Running TDSSKiller

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

    Posted Image

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

    Posted Image

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

    Posted Image

  • If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

NEXT:

I'd like to have you try running a scan with ComboFix again, and see if it proceeds running through the scans.

Hi,

I tried doing the combofix last night and the same thing happened. It seemed to start fine (opened new window, c:/, etc), and the cursor blinked. And blinked and blinked. For almost 3 hours. I had to go to bed, so I wanted to stop it.When I moved the mouse the hourglass came up and everything was frozen again. I could not do control alt delete, so I had shut the computer down. I had right clicked my symantec icon at the beginning so it would not be 'on' when combofix started. Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks!

Cris

Hi!

Let me grab some new logs from you and see what they show me.

Scanning with GMER

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

Notes:
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.
