Hi, I seem to be having the same problem many have listed on your site. I try searching for something in Yahoo or using the Google search bar and it brings up a list of related sites. When I try to click on one of results, I get redirected to a random site that is advertising, sometimes it says this page cannot be displayed. I have run Stopzilla but it isn't picking it up. I want to install Windows 7 on the computer but feel it should be free of all viruses before I do that.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Computer Update:
When I start my computer I get an error message in the bottom right "System tray". It says: Automatic Updates is turned off. Security ANtivirus might be out of date. Click this balloon to fix this problem. I have tried previously before we started working together to turn on the auto updates but it will not let me click it. It is "Grayed out" if you will.

Upon start up also: Stopzilla finds 109 infections. I haven't done anything about that per the instructions in the forum.

When I search the internet using any search engine or toolbar, I still get a list of sites that seem like what I'm looking for, but then I get redirected to advertising websites. The only way I have found around this is to copy the link and actuallly paste it in the address bar and click enter. Then it will take me to the site. If I click on the link provided by Yahoo or Google then I get redirected. it will even say redirect in the tab of IE while it is opening the advertisement page.

Hi!

Looks like we are dealing with a rootkit infection here.

Okay. Thanks for that information. We'll see what we can do to fix that.

Yeah, this is related to the infection you are infected with.

Do you recognize this file?

I do not recognize the file that you listed.

I was able to complete the TDSSKiller & Remove all programs that were suggested.

I have made it to the OTL Fix. I'm in the middle of this fix and an error message has popped up. The blue bar at the top has OTL in it.
The error says: Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts.

The only option I have is to hit OK.

I'm attaching the stuff from TDSSKiller in a reply in just a sec.

Again, thanks for helping.

Okay so I clicked okay on the error message and the box went away, but now the computer seems to be frozen.

Hi!

Looks like TDSSKiller found the main culprit.

Please yield this warning as well as run this new OTL fix.

The main infection that you were infected with is called TDL3.

See the snippet of text below:

You can read more about this infection here:

Special thanks to quietman7 for providing the above links.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

I am accessing this from my mac laptop so I can read it while completing it on my desktop and as I keep going I notice that info is being deleted from the code I'm supposed to enter into the custom scan/fixes for the OTL fix.

Do you think it is even worth saving this computer? What is your opinion. I read the links you suggested and I'm still not sure what to do. It is a personal computer, not business.

I have the Windows 7 install and the Office Prof. downloads purchased but they weren't running properly, which now I realize is because of all the infections on my computer.

DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND SOOOOO FRUSTRATED!!!!!

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.26.1 log created on 07172011_202222

Files\Folders moved on Reboot...

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

QUESTIONS?!
1. What infections are you suspecting still on my computer???
I'm so happy that the main culprit was deleted but am still concerned about all the stuff that is following.

2. Should I have stopzilla clean the 109 infections it finds?

3. What anti virus software do you recommend if this computer is fixed?

4. Before we started this fix, I copied all documents to an external hard drive. Do you think it is infected?

ISSUES WITH COMPUTER STILL:
I uninstalled the Google Search bar but it is still showing up in IE.
I still get that Automatic Udates is turned off error.
No other errors that I know about yet.

I AM ABLE TO SEACH IE WITHOUT REDIRECTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now, just worried about idenity theft and the backdoor trojan that is still on the machine.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT!!!

Hi!

Do you think it is even worth saving this computer? What is your opinion. I read the links you suggested and I'm still not sure what to do. It is a personal computer, not business.

If this were my computer, I'd reformat and re-install it.

1. What infections are you suspecting still on my computer???

It looks like the OTL fix that I gave you to run didn't run properly, which I suspect maybe related to trying to save the instructions on a mac, and then transfer them over.

2. Should I have stopzilla clean the 109 infections it finds?

I'm not a big fan of StopZilla. I feel like it's a big overzealous in what it detects, so I'd say for right now no.

3. What anti virus software do you recommend if this computer is fixed?

I usually recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast.

4. Before we started this fix, I copied all documents to an external hard drive. Do you think it is infected?

It's quite possible that it is. I would be sure to scan the drive with your anti-virus program, and even perform an online virus scanner on the drive.

I still get that Automatic Udates is turned off error.

I can provide a fix for this later.

Can you please try to run the OTL fix again, saving the fix on the infected computer, and try running it that way?

Sorry. The reason I downloaded it from the mac on to a flash drive is because half of the fix code was missing when I viewed the forum from the infected computer. I did just run it from the infected computer and it started to run, then gave the same error message as before:
OTL cannont creat file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts.
I clicked okay and it started shutting down and gave me this error:
Instruction @ Ox7760abc8 referenced memory @ 0x7760abc8 could not be written.

Then it rebooted and gave me this report:

Files\Folders moved on Reboot...
File\Folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\McAfee Security Scan Plus.lnk not found!
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts moved successfully.

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

I think it is pretty safe to say that I need to reformat and reinstall. How do I go about doing that?

Also, I have purchased the Windows 7 Upgrade. Do you think Upgrade is a problem, b/c I'm assuming that Windows XP will be deleted off my computer completely, therfore it wouldn't be an "upgrade"
Any suggestions on that?

hmm... That's a good question. If you're looking to go with updating your computer to Windows 7, I'd ask that you post in our Windows 7 forum, and see what the techs have to say about the restrictions and best method for going about the Update to Windows 7. I'm vaguely familiar with some of the restrictions and guidelines, but I think the techs would have a better idea on how to advice you on what you can and can't do. Please don't think that i'm abandoning you here, because I'm not, but I don't want to advise you to do something that could cause you issues later on down the road.
