I have been referred here from the "Am I infected? What do I do?" forum.

My computer is infected with a TDSS rootkit, and I have been unable to run either TDSS Killer or Fix TDSS. The link to the previous thread is http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic408356.html/page__pid__2326540#entry2326540.

I have attached logs from DSS and Gmer.

Thank you.

In terms of symptoms, the main symptom is the fact that McAfee keeps locating this rootkit as it scans and claims to delete it, but the rootkit is there again the next time I boot up. The second symptom is the fact that I cannot run the TDSS elimination software.

One other suspicious thing is activity from Internet Explorer. I don't use IE and it should not be active, but when I look into my McAfee Access Protection Log it is at times being blocked from doing various things, such as launching files from temp folders. It also looks active in Task Manager. I'm not sure whether any of that is relevant, but it makes me want to uninstall IE.

Hi,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is Shannon and I will be working with you to remove the malware that is on your machine.

I apologize for the delay in replying to your post, but this forum is extremely busy.

Please Track this topic - On the top right on this tread, click on the Watch Topic button, click on 'Immediate Email Notification', and then click on the Proceed button at the bottom.

Do Not make any changes on your own to the infected computer.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Now, let's look more thoroughly at the infected computer -

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from here:
  • Main Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Change the "Extra Registry" option to "Use SafeList"
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them into your reply:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Next, please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)
In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Once you have the above logs, click on the Add Reply button below, copy in the contents of the two OTL logs and the RKU log. Also include any comments that you might have concerning the infection(s) and the infected computer.
Shannon

If it helps, I know I got this trojan just after midnight on July 6 (i.e. around 0:30 or so on July 6). I clicked a hyperlink on a website (children's toys, of all things) and my computer started seizing up, McAfee started spewing virus messages (claiming to be deleting them), and that was that.

Hi-

Thanks for the logs and the info. Let's see if we can bring this infection under control.

Please download aswMBR ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • When you get the "Scan finished successfully" message, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.
  • It will also copy the MBR (Master Boot Record) into a file on your desktop - MBR.dat.

The first time I ran aswMBR.exe I got this:

I saw in my McAfee access protection log that a couple of actions had been blocked ("Prevent all programs from running files from the temp folder"), so I disabled McAfee and ran aswMBR again, but this time it did not seem to initialize and I got this:

Did you get the info you needed from the first scan, when McAfee was enabled? Also, when I ran aswMBR I got a popup box asking whether I want to download the latest version of Avast! antivirus software. I clicked "no" both times.

Hi-

The aswMBR log shows that you have a backdoor trojan infection. A backdoor trojan allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to continue with the cleanup -

Reboot. Disable McAfee -

How to Temporarily Disable your Anti-virusl

Re-Run aswMBR

  • In the AV Scan window, select (none).
  • Click Scan (if asked to update the Avast anti-virus definitions, click on No.)
  • When you get the "Scan finished successfully" message, click the FIX or the FixMBR button, whichever is lit.
  • There is a slight pause after clicking either the 'Fix' or 'FixMBR' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing above message will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

Next, download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please copy the "C:\ComboFix.txt" into your reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your reply, please copy in the aswMBR and ComboFix reports. How is your computer running now?

I have not been using the infected computer for the past month. It has not been connected to the internet other than when I am on this website (this is the only website that I have accessed). So, I have not accessed any bank sites, etc. Also, I checked and I have three passwords saved in Firefox, none of which are important. I do have files on the computer that contain sensitive information, but no other files with passwords. For example, I have pdfs of tax returns. Could these have been compromised, or is the trojan looking for text files with passwords, etc.? Considering the limited amount of time the computer has been connected to the internet, would it have had time to "do things", whatever they are? Does all of that happen instantaneously when it downloads and installs itself, or maybe does it work covertly while you're offline and then send everything as soon as you connect, or does a person need to physically be present at the other end, "looking" through your hard drive, or what? (I have no idea how these trojans work).

Second, my external drive was connected at the time the trojan downloaded. All of the files and folders on it were also hidden, so the trojan "saw" it. Can it be trusted, or should I reformat that as well? That is, is this trojan only in my registry, or are there other places it is hidden? If the external drive is fine, can you give me that nifty program that unhides everything? For some reason, it's not letting me unhide it all at once, the way I did on my hard drive.

Thanks.

Hi-

Connect your external hard drive and then rerun unhide.exe. It should unhide the files on that drive as well.

I don't know what would be safe and not safe because the main infection could open the door to other malware. I would think though that your data files would be safe since thieves are normally after passwords and such so they can clean out you bank accounts, etc.

I would like to clean the infection. Also, I don't have unhide.exe. I just changed all the file attributes manually, but I only had to do it once and all of the subfolders followed suit, whereas on my external drive the subfolders aren't doing that and I don't want to have to go through everything folder by folder. Can you include a link for unhide.exe please. Thanks.

When I ran aswMBR.exe, I clicked "Fix", and at some point I got a box that told me that the computer had to reboot to finish the fix. I clicked okay and it rebooted, but aswMBR did not continue, and no new log had been created. So I ran it again, and it did the same thing again. So, no luck there.

Here is my ComboFix log:

Hi-

Don't worry about the aswMBR report. I can tell from the ComboFix report that it did what it was meant to do.

You need to update Java and Internet Explorer.

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Select your Platform: Windows x86 Offline.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java™ 6 Update in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.
You need to update Internet Explorer .

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Thanks.
Shannon

I just ran my updated version of McAfee and it deleted ComboFix as well as whatever restore points it had set. I think they're just quarantined somewhere. Should I restore them, or is it okay to just download Combofix again if I need it? (It doesn't seem as though I need the restore points, everything is working okay).

Hi-

Glad to hear that things apprear to be normal. Don't worry about ComboFix - I hope we will be deleting it soon anyway.

I thought that I had sent you the link for Unhide when you asked for it earlier but I don't see out there. So, here it is - Unhide by Grinler. Needless to say, make sure your external drive is connected when you run it.

Let's check to see what else needs to be done.

Please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
  • Click on the Update tab and click the Check for Updates button.
  • When the update is finished, click on the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Next, I'd like for you to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control key and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip the next two steps)
  • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

In your reply, please copy in the MBAM and ESET OnlineScan reports.

c:\documents and settings\Anka\Desktop\WiNlOgOn.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

The file identified, winlogon.exe, was supposed to be a renamed version of rkill. But, both IE and Firefox were trying to launch it at various times, and I wasn't able to delete it when I tried, so I don't know what happened there. I got the file from bleepingcomputer or another similar forum when my computer first became infected, so it should have been okay.

ESET Online Scan did not find anything, and did not create a log.
