Hello, I am having a problem with my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that operates on Windows XP. All of my files have been deleted and my background goes black. At startup, a window called 'Windows XP Fix' opens up and starts running a 'PC Performance and Stability Report' that tells me that I have several infected files. I never installed this program and it won't let me close it either. I also get this message soon after from my computer: 'The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks. It is recommended that you restart the system.' I installed Malwarebytes while on safe mode and removed the infections, but when I went back to normal mode, nothing had changed. I went to safe mode with networking to update Malwarebytes but Malwarebytes was no longer installed and I couldn't connect to the internet. What can I do to fix this issue?

Malwarebytes report:

This is very outdated MBAM version.

Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking (in pure Safe Mode you won't be able to connect).

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

* Rkill.com
* Rkill.scr
* Rkill.exe

* Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
* If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
* A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
* If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
* If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
* Do not reboot until instructed.
* If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Then....

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:

Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Thanks Broni for your reply! I ran Rkill in safe mode and it didn't do much, but some of my desktop icons reappeared (only the basic ones). I am still missing all of my files and the desktop is still black. The Rkill log is posted below. I tried updating MBAM but it has been deleted from my system. I then tried re-installing the newest version of MBAM using first an .exe from a usb drive and then directly from the MBAM website while in safe mode and also normal mode, but I kept getting the same errors. While MBAM is extracting files during installation, I get the message: "Run-time error '53': File not found: mbamnet." The installation then continues, but at the end when MBAM is saving uninstall information, I get the message: "Access is denied." I then get the message: "Setup was not completed. Please correct the problem and run Setup again." And then MBAM starts 'Rolling back changes.'

Rkill log:
This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Rkill was run on 07/09/2011 at 23:28:23.
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

Rkill completed on 07/09/2011 at 23:28:26.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

My computer starts-up normally, except all of desktop icons I used to have, have disappeared. I was able to retrieve the basic icons (My Documents, My computer, Recycle Bin, etc.) after running Rkill. Seconds after start-up, my normally-blue background goes black and I get a window from a program called 'Windows XP Fix' that starts running a PC Performance and Stability analysis report. I never downloaded this program and I can't even close it, unless I use the Task Manager. I also start getting error messages that tell me "Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \\System32\\496A8300. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware" and "Windows has detected a bad sector on your hard disk drive..." and "Windows can't find hard disk space. Hard drive error." All of my files have disappeared. When I go to All Programs, I just get a message telling me it's empty. Even my C: drive is supposedly empty. Even the SUPERAntiSpyware that I just downloaded has disappeared. I know these programs still exist since SUPERAntiSpyware was able to scan them all.

Restart in Safe Mode with Networking.

1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
2. Restart your computer (very important).
3. Download and run this utility.
4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to).
5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here.

See, if you can update and run it.

I wasn't able to delete MBAM using Add/Remove but the mbam-clean utility removed it for me. I was able to re-install and update MBAM. The log is posted below. I am no longer getting the 'Windows XP Fix' window at startup and my desktop is no longer black. The only noticeable problem is that I still can't see my old files.

You're not saying if you're having any current issues.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
