Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Rootkit UnHooker (RkU)
Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

I followed the instructions provided for OTL and when I hit scan it closed and now I cannot open it at all. Any links I click in google still redirect me to 100ksearches or trisearch and various other sites just like them. I haven't changed anything in my system since I posted the last logs and everything is still the same as it was operation wise. The desktop and programs I run from the hard drive are largely unaffected as I have yet to find any problems running them. I only get problems when I use the internet, specifically it's slow and I get redirected to the places I mentioned above. If you need anymore information feel free to ask.

Hi!

I have a pretty good idea of what you are infected with.

We are going to need to utilize a more powerful tool, and this will require us to remove AVG from your computer first.

AVG Removal Tool

Download and save AVG Removal Tool to your desktop

Run it to remove AVG. After this, please restart your computer.

NEXT:

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I used combofix and now I cannot connect to the internet at all. I tried restarting like it said and still nothing. Combofix did generate a log but until I find a flash drive to transfer it I won't be able to post it.

Hi!

Please re-run ComboFix again, and then see if your internet connection is restored afterwards.

If not do this:

Please go to Start > Run > cmd.exe > ENTER

Copy/Paste the following bolded text followed by ENTER: NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG

Please reboot your computer after doing the above, and see if you're able to connect to the internet again.

Now combofix seems to be stuck at

Completed Stage 49

It's been like that for about 30 minutes now, not sure if that's normal or not.

Is it still stuck? If so, try exiting out of ComboFix and attempt to run it once more to see if it will bring back your internet, if it still won't finish running proceed with the next instructions in my previous post.

There was a process taking up a lot of CPU so I ended the process and CF resumed it's scan. However it was called findstr which I think is a CF process so it might not have been a good idea to end it. The scan isn't complete yet, when it is I'll post back if the internet works on the infected PC or not.

Each time I ran CF it would restart the PC because of "Rootkit activity" and every time it would get stuck at "Stage 49 Completed" With that findstr.exe taking up 50% CPU usage. I ran the command prompt and used the command line you gave me and restarted and the internet still doesn't work, it didn't work after I ran CF again either. If you need any other information I'll give what I can, still trying to find a flash drive to transfer the log files so I can post them. hte name of the rootkit I believe was ZeroAccess.

Hi Seth1985!

hte name of the rootkit I believe was ZeroAccess.

Yeah, you seem to be infected with ZeroAccess, which can be a bit of a pain, and it messes with your ability to connect to the internet.

It'd be very helpful, if you were able to post the ComboFix log for me to review. So if you could find a flash drive in the house, that'd be great. :)

I'd like to have you try to run ComboFix in Safe Mode with Networking and see if the scan is able to complete successfully for you there and maybe if the internet access will be restored there.

Safe mode with networking doesn't work. All I get is a black screen and my desktop won't load. It will let me use plain safe mode though, should I go ahead and use that to run CF?

Do you want all of the CF logs I have or just the most recent?

Try to run it in regular Safe Mode, and see if that will allow you to run the ComboFix scan successfully and at this point, I don't think it can hurt to see all of the ComboFix logs.

When safe mode loads I have the choice of selecting my account or administrator. When I set the PC up the very first time I made myself administrator, but seeing that it is a selection choice at start-up in safe mode should I use that instead of my account?
