Hi there,

So about a week ago, my computer was infected with a nasty backdoor.cycbot virus with the name of dwm.exe. I have Symantec Endpoint (provided by my university) and Malwarebytes (free version). My AV automatically popped up indicating a virus was running. I had to actually press a couple of buttons to quarantine the virus because Symantec indicating it couldn't do anything while virus was running? Anyway, next I automatically did a complete scan with Malware Bytes - found 8 infected items and deleted them out. However, then I tried to than run Symantec - there was an error message. I didn't save the error message but it indicating there was a problem with Symantec. I tried running in safe mode, etc - nothing. After a couple fail attemps, I did a system restore that only went back to two weeks and that was a challenge in itself. Challenge was that it seemed that system restore was being blocked but after a couple attempts it worked. With the system restore (and the 5th reboot), everything started to work again.

Problem now is everytime I delete out my internet explorer history, Trojan.Gen2 starts according to my AV and is quarantined. Then my LAN settings is automatically changed I can't get back onto the internet. I usually manually just uncheck the box to fix this under Internet Options. I than run Maleware Bytes and 1 infection is always found - a registry value error. Per Malwarebytes, its "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon|Shell. I delete this registry every single day so far. I'm not sure why this keeps coming back. Any ideas?

Side note, working with Vista and 16bit HP laptop computer if that helps.

(Sorry for spelling errors - can't seem to spell check.)
Thank you.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image

Hi,

I've tried running Gmer but it seemed to have stopped half way through and just didn't move. My computer went to sleep since even though it looked like it was running - it wasn't really. I'll post what I have so far.

I was just re-infected again with a Trojan which was intially caught and quarantined. However, it then turned off my firewall (which never happened before), removed by Symantec Endpoint and installed a Vista's windows type AV in it's place and wouldn't let me open an Internet page. Ran Malwarebytes again and 4 infected items were found and removed. Do you need that log?

Or should I just follow the instructions you last asked about? Thanks

Good, proxies settings held.

What are the current issues?

Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
  • Close SUPERAntiSpyware.
Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; pick Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

  • Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

I will post once I've downloaded what you've indicated.

My current problem is that I'm constantly infected with the same virus everyday if not twice a day. I've never had this problem before and I'm not visiting strange websites. This last infection occured when I just opened msn.com. I think getting the same infection on a daily basis seems strange when I've never encountered this problem before the cycbot backdoor that I mentioned previously. I'm not sure if something is left behind and it's trying to reactivate itself or it's hiding somewhere that my antivirus can't find?

I will post findings shortly.

Only new thing I see now is a small statement when I rebooted that some programs were blocked on startup. I only scanned the C drive as indicated. If you need me to scan the D drive as well please let me know. Thanks

Just infected with another three Trojan's which where quarantined by Symnatec. Name of trojans were DWHD145.tmp and QWHF95E.tmp.

The only website I was in was this one.

Will be re-running Malwarebytes yet again. I hope you can help as you can see the trojans are coming constantly and I can't figure where from?

It seems to be the same infection over and over again.

To be on a safe side I think more checking with more advanced tools (not allowed in this forum) is needed.

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!
