I'm taking a stab in the dark with this but here it goes,

However, the family laptop here at home suddenly won't start up since yesterday afternoon. I.e. what I mean by this is that if you press the start button it will only light up briefly before shutting down suddenly and completely.

My parents say it's completely dead and they want to get a new one. However, I don't think such a drastic step is needed, also the laptop has important information on it too.

The laptop in question is a COMUPAQ made in 2006/2007, and run on a Windows Vista operating system.

Thanks in advance for any replies I might receive!

Hi Kman12 :)

From what you describe, it sounds like maybe a dead battery, faulty charger, faulty power jack. or faulty motherboard.
Investigate and eliminate in that order if you can. Do not forget to check simple things like a known working power socket and plug fuse.
