I've been helped by Broni on this subject. He asked me to post it in this forum.

Mod Edit: Removed redundant BlueScreenView data ~ Hamluis.

Broni, I just had another BSOD. The unusual thing is that I didn't need to push the shutdown button on the PC, it restarted without waiting for me to do anything.

Hope to hear from you on this new forum, I don't know how to include our posts from the WVista forum, but I'm sure you can work around that.

Mod Edit: Topic in XP, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic407547.html ~ Hamluis. Thanks

As the subject tells, I have been experiencing frequent BSODs and Firefox crashes. I have an updated McAfee AV, plus Total Protection with continous scans telling me that my Dell Inspiron 1720 is working fine and secure(?). I have had requests from Windows Update to install the following since quite a time ago:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2446708)

Download size: 11.2 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system that is running the Microsoft .NET Framework and gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

More information:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=204898

Help and Support:
http://support.microsoft.com

It has failed all the times I tried to install it.

I checked both RAM sticks, but the problem continues. I now wonder about a mother board problem, but I don´t know much about computers. Broni sent me to this forum.

I hope that with your help I can resolve the problem. I have tried Malwarebytes Anti Malware before with no success either.

I havn't defragmented my disk in a long time, because a got the Blue Screen, or black sometimes, telling that I have a disk error or a memory problem, and have been impossible to complete defragmentation.

That's all the info I can provide at this moment.

Thanks for your time and dedication to help not experts, like me.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Broni, I ran the vemcmg6q version of GMER. Just after I dragged it to my desktop (I couldn't find other way) the ROOtkit/Malware tab showed. I closed it, checked your link to "disable any real-time active protection" found it obsolete since my McAfee page didn't show like the one Dick Tracy showed (no exit on the right click) so I disabled real time protection and firewall, tried to disable Windows Defender but wasn't possible and since it was scheculed to run in 30 mins, I left it.

When I ran GMER and clicked scan (no warnings) the scan started, but stopped after a minute or so, not with a rootkit warning window but with a Window's window that told me the computer was going to be shutted down, I clicked OK on yhat window (no other option) and a darn BSOD showed up, here is the minidump:

You said I should try again, un-check devices or run in safe mode. At this hour I'm not going to continue trying, I'm sending this to you in case you have any suggestion, but if I don't hear from you, I'll go with the next steps tou suggested, tomorrow.

Thanks and good night,

PS: After the three last trials ran, do you see something valuable?

Too early to comment.

Try this one instead of GMER....

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Broni, when I was loading the RkU, a pop up told me that it was loaded, if I want to reload. I clicked yes and a BSOD showed up.

I closed it by forcing shutdown (as always do) and tried again, this time worked OK and the report follows:

If you want the mini from the BSOD I mention here, please let me know.

Thanks again and I hope you find something that I don´t see on neither of the 4 reports sent.

PS: On the original RkU report it said at the end after >Stealth... that nothing was found on this category, I don't know why it doesn't on the report saved at my Desktop.

All looks clean so far....

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

I ran both programs. Nothing noticed after the first one. The results on the ESETScan follows:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Users\JLLozano\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\2eo84u22.default\extensions\{a451c0b4-dca6-4872-b9cd-64f01abe4293}\chrome\xulcache.jar.vir JS/Agent.NCP trojan deleted - quarantined
C:\Users\JLLozano\Downloads\registrybooster.exe a variant of Win32/RegistryBooster application deleted - quarantined
C:\Users\JLLozano\Downloads\registrybooster2rrlab.exe Win32/RegistryBooster application deleted - quarantined
C:\Users\JLLozano\Downloads\speedupmypc.exe Win32/SpeedUpMyPC application deleted - quarantined
C:\Users\JLLozano\Downloads\Downloads\registrybooster.exe a variant of Win32/RegistryBooster application deleted - quarantined

At the start of the running of the ESET, THE Windows notice of "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" popped up, I thought my PC was going to crash again, but the note stayed during the more than 4 hours that the test scan lasted (I didn´t close it since I was afraid of stopping the scan as well) surprisingly it let me continue, while in previous ocassions the PC stopped working when I closed it.

Any new light you can see, Broni, on my problem?. Should I uninstall all the programs downloaded to make all this checks?

Thanks again

Thanks

I don´t know where my almost finished reply went, I was writing it and probably I clicked the wrong key.

Well Broni, I wanted you to know that I got anothe BSOD, it follows:

==================================================
Dump File : Mini071211-01.dmp

Parameter 2 : 0x00000000
Parameter 3 : 0x000001b8
Parameter 4 : 0x00000022
Caused By Driver : ntkrnlpa.exe
Caused By Address : ntkrnlpa.exe+cdb3f
File Description : NT Kernel & System

==================================================

Should I replace both RAM sticks? I also have the problem of not being able to put my PC on sleep nor Hibernaton stages. When I try to restart, there is only a black screen and have to force the shutdown.

I´m about to throw this Dell Notebook to the trash and get another type.

Any suggestions?

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" popped up

That may be a sign of some infection not detectable with tools we're using here.

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team.
Please make sure that you read the information about getting started first.
Then start a new thread HERE and include or required logs.
Including a link to this thread will be helpful.

Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!
