Eset NOD32 scan shows the following in Quarantine:

Kryptik.PXG trojan
Kryptik.PRB trojan
Kryptik.PQH trojan (3 times)
TrojanDownloader.OpenStream.NCE trojan
ScrInject.B.Gen virus

SAS only finds adware cookies.

These were detected by scans that I ran to resolve virus like activity I had been having. Each time it appeared the ESET removed the issue, but a couple days later it would return. In addition Google appeared to redirect most, then eventually all sites to fake security sites. Now I cannot do anything with my user profile because it is trying to open the exe with something, but wants me to select the program to open it with. Like a document with missing associations. I know the programs are there, I can open them from my admin profile.

Running Windows 7 - 64 bit

I have downloaded and run DDS from the admin profile, here are the logs.

I had no issues running this, so I attached the logs. Apparently there have been some recent updates put out by several pograms that I have on this computer, as they asked me to install updates, but I declined for now.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I ran combofix without major incident.

The PC has two user profiles, admin and Sara. Only admin works, Sara has the redirect problem.

I downloaded combofix from a different computer to a thumb drive, and copied it to the desktop of my laptop in the admin user profile. I was able to run it from there, and finally it rebooted the computer. When the computer restarted, I tried to log in to the other user profile (Sara), but combofix was trying to start on reboot, and just looped from that user profile, so I restarted the computer again, and logged in to admin. Combofix completed normally, and wrote the log file. I have attached that file.

Still from the other user profile when I try to start any program I get the "Open with" dialog. I was getting that before as well. I went and found the Firefox executable, and told it to use that to open the program. Firefox did indeed open, but was a bit confused about why I was asking it to open an application program. I told it to ignore that, and it did. Tried searching with Google, and that worked without a redirect. Now the only thing I am missing is that executables do not execute on their own from the desktop or the menu, or from a shortcut. they do execute if I try to open a document. It is almost like Windows doesn't know what to do with a *.exe file.

Hello

see if this helps things - Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\users\Sara\AppData\Local\Qjifakeco.bin

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Both exeHelper, and Combofix ran without a problem, the logs are attached.

I was still not able to open an exe directly from the Sara user profile.

I copied exeHelper to the desktop of that profile, and ran it there, the log looks the same as for the run under admin. I had to give the admin password to run it.

After that run, three of the icons on the task bar turned into text document icons. If I try to open any of these, I get a "Can't open this item" dialog. If I look at the properties, the location on these three items says C:\Users\Sara\AppData\Local\Temp\smtmp\3. If I try to open most applications like Firefox, I get the "Open with" dialog, and now Firefox is the recommended program to open the application. If I try to open Acrobat Reader, I get an "Application Not found" dialog, but the application path that it says it can't find is really there. I can navigate to it with Windows explorer, but once again if I try to open it directly from windows explorer, it gives me the "Open with" dialog with Firefox as the recommended choice. But if I double click a .pdf document, Acrobat opens properly.

Here are the logs:

Notepad opened, but there is nothing in it. I cannot find smtmp either through windows explorer. There are not many programs on the task bar, I could just delete them and be done with it. I have Windows Explorer, but I can only get to it via a browse button on an application, or when inserting a thumb drive. I have Thunderbird, and Firefox, and Sticky Notes which I don't use.

My biggest issue is that I cannot execute a *.exe by double clicking it or a shortcut. I also want to know how to get Firefox off the list of associated applications for a *.exe.

Hello

Are the other profiles on the computer getting redirected?

I think that the easiest thing to do with this profile is to remove any files you want from it and then delete it and make a new one - to many things seem to be wrong with it

I will let you know what happens.
