Hello again. The computer has been acting buggy lately. I'll be on a site and then I will notice that another tab is open at the bottom of the screen from some sort of spam website. (Money lenders, sweepstakes, etc...). Windows Security Essentials is up to date and I've run a few FULL scans. Nothing comes up. I've also updated and run Maleware Bytes; again nothing. However, this keeps happening. So I ran a HJT scan. For SOME reason, I always get a message telling me some files are denying access and no matter WHAT I do, it does not go away. I am running it on the administrator profile too. Anyway, I noticed about 9 entries in the 010 section of the scan. However, when it makes the log entry, they are not there! As a matter of fact, other entries are not there too. This is perplexing me.

I also ran an OTL scan...at this point, I am not sure what is going on. The computer isn't running AWFUL, but the new tabs opening are obviously not right, so I can only imagine what else is going on!

I was investigating some options when I decided to hold off and ask the experts here for help. From what I have learned, IF there is a Winsock issue I don't want to start trying random things and risk causing SERIOUS harm to the computer!

I am running Vista with Microsoft Security Essentials. I also have Maleware Bytes, WinUtilities, Ccleaner and for a very short time...something else that escapes me.

Here are the scan logs that I just completed recently. What do you see? Is there anything to worry about? Also, there are TWO user profiles on this computer. Are these logs posting results for BOTH profiles and do the virus/maleware programs automaticly scan ALL users? I thought they did, but now I am wondering...

Any and all help is much appreciated!

I am not trying to "bump" this topic, but I just noticed that when I run HiJackThis that the date the log is saved says "8/21/2010". Why is that? It also has Avira listed; I got rid of Avira awhile ago in favour of MSE. Now I am REALLY confused. I've never had a problem running HJT before. (Other than the message I get EVERYTIME that the hosts files have denied access, that is.)

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
