Hello,
This is my second computer with issues that I'm posting here (it's actually my parents comuter). Happy to say the first time around my bout with the google-redirect issue on my computer was quickly resolved and I donnated (I will do the same this time around as well).

This computer boots up very, very slow and has issues with slow initiation of software (that is, right after clicking on it from the desktop). It also constantly presents updates. Let me know what you see with the following logs

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

Hello iselltrees,

Sorry about the delay.

:step1: Please download MiniRegTool.zip by Farbar and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip the file and double click on MiniRegTool.exe to run the tool (run as Administrator for Windows Vista/7).
  • Copy and paste the content of code box below into the edit box:
    {E78B1503-6EA1-0AE1-03FF-C30823397119}
  • Check the Search: radio button and make sure that there is also a check mark on HKCU and HKLM.
  • Press Go button and post the result (Result.txt).

:step2: Please run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Go to update tab and download all updates and then perform a full scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hello,
Please see "result" file attached. Also, please see MBAM log below. In case it means anything...after running the "miniregtool" the computer prompted me to restart due to updates (by the way, this is also one of the problems...constant updates...not sure if this is a VISTA thing or just something funky inside my parents computer). I elected to restart later (4 hours), but it re-started anyway. I ran the MBAM log approximately 4 hours after this restart. Thanks

Hi,

Please temporary remove AVG so it will not interfere with combofix. You can reinstall it again afterward.

Download Combofix (by Subs) from any of the links below, make sure that you save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

  • It's important to temporary disable your anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. See HERE
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.

*It's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
*The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
*This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Posted Image

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Important notes:

  • Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Please do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.
  • ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper. See HERE.

Let's run some more scan to make sure that we didn't miss any malware.

:step1: Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please download ERUNT.
  • Follow the detailed instructions HERE on how to install and run ERUNT.
  • Make sure that you have successfully installed and ran ERUNT before proceeding with the next instruction.

:step2: Launch Notepad, and copy-paste the contents of the codebox below into a new text file. Save it on your Desktop as fixme.reg. For the "save as type" choose all files

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E78B1503-6EA1-0AE1-03FF-C30823397119}]

  • Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
  • You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
  • Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".
  • Restart your computer.

:step3: ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here to run the scan.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close, but make sure you copy the logfile first.
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

okay, here's the ESET logfile (by the way, the instructions weren't exactly as it played out, but I managed to get through). Can you let me know, for future reference, if there was something specific that was "gumming up the works" on this computer?

That's a clean log and to be honest there's no strong signs of malware files so I am thinking of a possible conflict on your installed programs or lack of computer maintenance. Anyway, please do the following and let me know how's the computer running afterward.

:step1: Check your hard disk for errors...

  • Click Start button >> Computer.
  • Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check >> click Properties.
  • Click the Tools tab, under Error-checking >> click Check Now. (Note: Type the administrator password or provide confirmation when ask).

*To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors.

*To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

  • Click Start.

:step2: Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > right click on the Command Prompt and choose “Run as administrator” (Input the administrator password) then copy/paste the bolded text below and hit Enter.

defrag.exe c: -w

Note: Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk.

sorry about the delay. I defragged, and attempted to check hard disk for errors, but got a response saying that I'd have to run the check on the C: drive at start up. I tried remotely rebooting (I've been using TeamViewer with my parents computer), but didn't get any indication that it was running the "check for errors" when starting up.

I am going to have my parents (it's there computer) check out the functionality of their computer over the next couple of days and will reply back on Tuesday evening.

Thanks for taking a look, I'll now donate for helping me out...thanks

Hi,

No worries about the delay, observe the computer and let me know if there's any more issues. Thanks for the donation. :)

Hi,

Nothing really serious malware there, just a registry entry with no Google hint. I think disk check and Defrag did the trick.

Update Adobe Reader so you will not become vulnerable for infections.

  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader. --> HERE
  • Uncheck any optional download like Free Google Toolbar or Free McAfee® Security Scan Plus.
