So when I click links from Google searches sometimes it takes me to the wrong website. But for me it hasn't been nearly as bad as what some other people are describing -- it only happens like one in every 25 or so links, I'd say. It doesn't annoy me too much.

When it comes to security I know I am basically doing nothing to protect my computer, which I've had for the better part of a year without any problems. I don't have backup or any antivirus software at all. When updates from Java or Adobe fail, I just sort of ignore it. I'm blown away by the effort these volunteers are putting in to help people with their security issues. I just don't know if my mild situation would be worth the trouble, and it seems sometimes threads with 50 replies don't always end successfully. Does having this redirect problem mean that nastier stuff will soon happen to my computer?

Using Firefox on a Windows 7.

Thanks!

We'll have to do some checking....

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=====================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=====================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Can you check if redirection takes place in IE as well?

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

============================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

No, the redirects only seem to happen in Firefox (although very erratically -- some days five links in a row, but just now I was trying to make it happen but got bored clicking random links before I could reproduce the effect even in FF, so maybe I didn't try IE for long enough, or maybe it's fixed already, is that possible?).

EDIT: just got a redirect in FF.

This topic will stay open, so keep using your computer normally and let me know if it'll happen again.

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

========================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Temp File Cleaner ran successfully, and it did ask me to restart the computer, which I did. ESET Online Scanner ran sucessfully and returned "No threats found", with no text file to save.

I still have been getting redirects. Is it a problem that I've been running everything on a non-admin account, but with every program I have to type in the admin password to verify, and the programs still seem to search through everything in the C: drive?

Again, thanks.

You did fine.

Can you check, if IE is getting redirected as well?

Let's try reset your router.

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and Windows 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.
Restart computer and check for redirections.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

Having done some more testing, I am pretty confident that redirection does not happen in IE for me.

I'm assuming this router resetting thing will cause everyone who shares the router with me to have to set things up again? Which of the steps on the about.com page you linked do you mean is included in "re-checking your router security settings"? I'd like to hold off messing up everyone else's internet for as long as possible... is there anything else I might try before doing that, if that's what happens if I reset the router?

Thanks.

If you're sure, IE is doing fine let's try one more thing before resetting router.

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode).
If you're using Firefox 4, or 5 go [b]Help>Restart Firefox with Add-ons Disabled.
Same issue?

No redirects with disabled Add-ons. Should I just delete them one by one, or is there something else I can do?

Let's see, if we can spot something....

Download FoxScan from HERE

Double click on FoxScan.exe to start the scan.
DOS-like window will pop-up.
Press 2 for English. Press Enter.
Be patient. It'll take few minutes.
When the tool is done, it'll display:

Search completed.
Press any key to coninue...

Press any key.
Notepad window titled Rapport-FS.txt will open.
Save the file to known location, and attach it to your next reply.

Hmm, I can't get it to work. I press 2, and then Enter, and some message pops appears, I think it says "Scanning" and then something else, but before I can read all of it, the whole thing disappears. (This happened the first time I tried too, and I believe it said "Access denied", so I ran as administrator. I think it's a different message now.)
