cannot post any logs - no connection, posting from a different pc
was upgraded to windows 7 about 6 mos ago and was working until a week ago

It will not connect to internet and shows unidentified network.

1st problem was only only 21mb of free space on HD. He purchased an external HD to move files off the machine. This may or may not be when the problem started. The internet just stopped working and no other changes have been made recently. His kids are the users so who knows.

I freed up about 1 gb and uninstalled AVG, it was giving some errors. I disabled windows firewall.

After reading numerous fixes I reset and re-installed the network card, disabled, enabled it, checked protocols etc. When set to grab ip automatically it gets a 169xxx... I tried to plug in the info (ip, gateway, etc.) from another PC on my network to force it, nothing! My connection works fine on two PC's so I know everything is ok up to the machine. released the ip but it will not renew and times out. One thing I noticed is the location was public, I changed it to workgroup but it keeps changing back to public, not on reboot but while it's running. I get the feeling something is blocking it but I can't see it. The troubleshooter comes down to "Local Area Connection does not have a valid ip configuration. At one point the troubleshooter said windows firewall was blocking it but it was already disabled. I checked again and it turned itself back on, maybe after a reboot, not sure. I have seen pages and pages about this but none have resolved this one. How can I get to the bottom of this?

I'm here!

The PC in question is at work and I will be able to do whatever you ask starting tomorrow AM. There are logs in the thread I was referred from as well if you would like to see those.

Also, since I cannot connect to the internet with that PC, I have been using an external HD to download the various tools and transfer logs back and forth.

Thank You!

Okay, let's start with an OTL scan

  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

That looks clean. Please next run aswMBR, we need to rule out rootkit activity at this stage

  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon to run it
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop and post it in your next reply.

So far this is a clean machine.

Can you try and fix the connection. If you're clean this will work.

if your network icon appears on the Windows taskbar, then you can repair it by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Repair.

Posted Image

If you have no task bar icon do this:

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click on the Settings menu option.
  • Click on the Control Panel option.
  • When the Control Panel opens, double-click on the Network Connections icon. If your Control Panel is set to Category View, then double-click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections at the bottom.
  • You will now see a list of available network connections. Locate the connection for your Wireless or Lan adapter and right-click on it.
  • click on the Repair menu option.

Posted Image

Let the repair process perform its tasks and when it has finished, hopefully your Internet connection should be working again.

if not try step two

Step two

  • Go to Start > Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and DSL or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and choose Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item.
  • Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back.
  • Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically".
  • Click OK twice to get out of the properties screen and restart your computer.
  • If not prompted to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

In I.E.
  • Check internet options settings.
  • Tools > Internet Options > Connections
  • LAN settings
  • Choose "automatically detect settings"
  • uncheck both proxy settings boxes

In FireFox
  • Click on Advanced -> Network -> Setttings…
  • the No Proxy option should be selected

Did you even read the other thread that I was referred from? Look at what has been tried? Look at those logs?

I was under the impression that I was sent over here because something was noted in that info that indicated a virus or malware problem.

I have been very patient and I appreciate your help very much but the problem is not a common fix as you are suggesting. It's been tried with no result. If you could please look at the original thread linked at the top of this thread and note the errors in the IP configuration, and the fact that the location keeps changing back to public as if something is blocking it.

Fairly insulting...

I was under the impression that I was sent over here because something was noted in that info that indicated a virus or malware problem.

I've no idea why you have been sent over here. The MBAM log showed nothing more than adware and no other log indicates anything else. Therefore, having removed all those entries from the machine and without any evidence that you had tried to reconnect since I felt it might be an idea to try it before we went further.

Okay, so we'll stick with malware as the issue and next please run Combofix

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Ah, now that folder is a problem and it creates outbound traffic which might cause your connection some problems.

Please run MBAM next

Please download Posted Image Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If MBAM won't update then download and update MBAM on a clean computer then save the rules.ref folder to a memory stick. This file is found here: 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware' then transfer it across to the infected computer.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.
