We have been infected with Windows XP Repair and at one point have had all of the symtoms described in your article including the google redirects.

When first infected we had not read your article and did not know to look for all symptoms. I did a windows restore point. That restored my desktop icons. I then did an image backup of the infected boot disk, just in case. I thought things were fixed, so I installed windows explorer 8 and tried to install FireFox. I must have been redireced to a fake download site becauce I wound up apparently installing a bunch of bad stuff. Upon rebooting and opening windows explorer, the computer went crazy with many popups and who knows what else. The computer was unuseable. It did no good to turn off internet explorer because something in the computer would start pop-up windows no matter what.

I restored the image backup that I made right after the windows restore point.

The crazyness was gone, but then strange music and voice was still there and later we discovered the google redirects. I uninstalled the akamaitechnologies server that was on my computer and that seemed to stop the strange music. I thought that I could live with the google redirects until I got help, but then I discovered that certain programs were not working right and I could not install others that required log file creation. Amoung those:

I tried remove and install Silverlight (needed for Netflix movies) and it refused to install because it said that it could not write to log file.
Sibelius starts, but components that require log files fail and it cannot find all of its components.
Some programs like Sonar seem to work OK (at least for what I tried) and shut down ok.
Other programs like Winamp seem to startup and run ok, but when exiting create a crash message.

Somewhere in the above process I ran Malwarebyte (quick scan) and it found a bunch of stuff including Trojans, but that did not fix the google redirects and the other problems mentioned above.

I was beginning to feel overwhelmed at this point. I had an image backup from Feb 2010. I cloned the infected disk to another hard drive to have acces to all of our Sibelius, Sonar and other files and restored the Feb 2010 image.

It was after this that I read your article on Windows XP Repair and began to have some hope that you folks could help. I signed up for an account under the name TomSpeedy.
I shut down the computer, unplugged the SATA cable for the FEB 2010 image restored hard drive and plugged in the cloned disk with the infection. Upon booting from the infected clone, the google redirects appear to be gone, but the other problems (Sivlerlight and other stuff) continue.

I am writing this from the infected drive. I generated the required files, but was unable to attach the ark.txt file because of an error message that said the file was too big. Properties said that the ark.txt file was just under 1megabytes.

I could not attach Ark.txt because of Error This file was too big to upload.
I tried to do the help thing with attaching files, but last time I lost the whole post and had to retype and copy all of this a 2nd time. I am going to post without the Ark.txt file. Maybe I can post that latter. Attached File  attach.txt   19.96KB   0 downloads

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

My wife and I are busy with getting ready for a trip, I won't be able to deal with this until August. I did have an image backup from Feb 2010. While waiting for your reply, I have been working on bringing that image restore up to date by installing the missing software. I still have more to go, but a lot of the functionality is back. I have a clone of the infected disk connnected by USB to obtain whatever files that do not seem corrupted. The Sibelius sound set files (*.xml) all seem to be corrupted in that Sibelius refuses to load them. I had to use backups from another computer in the house.

I would like to pursue fixing the infected hard drive as an educational exercise perhaps sometime in August. Do I re-submit then?
