A few hours ago my computer was infected with a virus that pretended to be Windows security (I'm using XP, service pack 3) and generally messed up my computer. I'm not entirely sure where I picked up the virus; I have occasionally gone to dodgy websites and used P2P file sharing, but none recently. Fortunately I found a handy-dandy guide advising me to use Malwarebyte, which worked, but although the constant fake alerts are gone I'm still experiencing significant problems.

- Something's redirecting my Google searches to various websites, seemingly at random. Sometimes I'll be redirected, usually to a results page for the same search of a different search engine, sometimes to the StopZilla website and sometimes it doesn't bother hijacking the search at all.
- I'm getting blue screens and complete freezes when I'm not in safe mode. Two of the blue screens happened about thirty seconds after the computer started up, but the third and both freezes occured after I'd been using it for a few minutes.
- Malwarebyte is constantly popping up to tell me that it's blocked a program from connecting to a potentially malicious IP. The IP it's trying to connect to changes, but there seems to be a limited selection of them. I haven't found any option in MWB to delete or quarantine the program attempting to make the connection, nor one to locate it, so I'm not sure what to do about this.
- Everything's still running very slowly, although it does occasionally speed back up to normal. According to Task Manager, svchost.exe is using up between 75 and 95 percent of my system's resources at all times. Google tells me that this is usually just a bug, but since it cropped up at exactly the same time as the virus I'm a tad suspicious. Also, the bug is apparently linked to the automatic updater, but svchost continues to use up all my memory even when updates are disabled.

So far I've run a second, quick Malwarebyte scan, which found nothing, and I'm currently running a third, full scan, this one in safe mode since I read that may help, and a SUPERAntiSpyware scan which has found one threat (System.BrokeFileAssociation).

Sorry if I posted in ths wrong forum, didn't post the right info, etc - I'm new here and there's quite a lot of stickies to read, so I skimmed most of them.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Let me know about MBAM full scan results.

When done....

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

===========================================================================

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

===========================================================================

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

The Rootkit Unhooker didn't work in safe mode, and in normal mode I was blue screened every time before it had a chance to assemble the report. I managed to fix the issue by creating a new account and using that instead, so I'm guessing that issue is something related to my main account.

I don't see any AV program running.
Please install one of these:
- Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

========================================================================

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Now, seeing RKUnhooker results and BSV report indicating iaStor.sys file being at fault...
iaStor.sys is an often target of rootkits, so...

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the logs you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on, the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Now that your log is posted and you are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Removal Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Louis
