Difficulty With Slow System

I was advised to post to this forum for a posting that I posted a few days ago. My post was as follows:

I am running Windows XP, and have a 2.4 gigahertz processor, itís always been a very fast system. RAM memory is 1 GB. 32GB of hard drive used, and 44 GB free. But now whenever I startup a program like Microsoft Word, Excel, and other types of programs, the computer takes about 5 seconds to load the program up, when it used to load it instantly. Itís not only the Microsoft Office programs that are slow to load.

I have also now noticed that if I am playing music on my computer through itunes ( I have an Ipod), if I use other applications, the itunes program begins to stop playing the music, freezes, crackle the sound quality. It acts like the processor canít manage all of the activity at the same time, which it never used to have a problem like this.

I keep an active copy of McAffee Virus on my computer and have run spyware programs, etc and other types of programs to diagnose and boost performance, but with no change. The computer is about 3 years old. I have defragged also.

When the computer is sitting idle without any processed running, the CPU usage was bouncing back and forth between 1% - 25%. But when loading another program it would reach 100%. While running itunes and playback of song, it would bounce mostly betweeen 30% to 100%. I have 522048 in available memory. 1048048 in total memory. I'm sure that itunes is a bit of a hog, but I don't understand why it takes so long to simply load something like Microsft Word (5 seconds) when it used to load instantly. I'm running Office 2003 by the way...

I have minimized the number of programs that are started upon startup, but it still takes a tremendously long time to boot completely (at least compared to how it used to be). I defrag regularly also.

I have run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, Housecall, BitDefender, and McAFee Avert Stinger. I use Macafee Security. My hijack log is posted below. THanks for any assistance!!!!!!

Welcome,
Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

============

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")
