Hello,

Two days ago I got hit with "Windows XP Repair". I was able to restore to a previous date, run MBAM, and supposedly remove the trojan. Now today I'm having issues with redirects in Google. Please help.

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until Iíve given you the ďAll clear.Ē Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
Posted Image Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • GMER log

RPMcMurphy,
After I initially posted here my wife (not knowing I had posted and was working on the problem) called the Microsoft Internet Security line and the tech did some things. I guess he was "able to get rid of the issue" using SuperAntispyware, and Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, however I am not convinced the problem is gone entirely.

As requested I will post the Gmer Log:

The Kaspersky tool looks to have removed the worst of it, but I see some mop up to take care of.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections was a backdoor trojan/rootkit.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, you should change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

You can read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Posted Image P2P - I see you have P2P software (Limewire) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at BC are complete.

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled. This is because AVG falsely detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first. You may do this through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs or you can use this tool for a more complete removal:

Download AppRemover from here saving it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run AppRemover
  • Follow the prompts to remove AVG
  • Reboot
Once you've removed AVG with this tool please continue with these instructions
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log

Drew2797:

How is your computer running now? Please do this next:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Java™ can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. If it does not, let me know.

Once the install is complete...

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Posted Image Please run ESET Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes copy and paste the results into your next reply.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • How is the computer running?
  • ESET log

RPMcmurphy:

I tried to upload to both sites, but the file is larger than the allowed file size. They both allow 20MB and the systemmechanic5pro.exe file is 30MB. Any other ideas?

Did you obtain your copy of System Mechanic Pro legitimately? The reason I ask is that the file in question should be good unless the program was obtained from a questionable source or you are using a keygen.

To be honest it's been on this computer so long I don't remember how I obtained it. If System Mechanic Pro is potentially causing security issues I have no problem uninstalling the program and deleting the .exe file.
