Hi,

My machine has the following symptoms which hint at a malware attack somewhere deep inside.

1) Whenever my machine is started I get alerts for

antivirus, firewall automatic updates disabled (on the taskbar) -- this quickly changes to
antivirus and firewall disabled (one less this time)

2) Security center would show antivirus definition not found

If the history of how it started happening is of any significance here it is - I have had an attack of XP Home Security which I found to be a dangerous malware. However I tried cleaning it up on my own (of course with help of internet search) and thought I got rid of it. However it doesn't look like that it is true.

3) Some of the new symptoms

IE 7 wont launch any links/URLs upon clicking, though it is my default browser

4) Chrome wont launch at all. Tried Reinstalling but that is of no help.

5) Firefox kind of working - at least I could open this site and post my problem.

However my gmail chat won't launch on it; only the plain HTML version of gmail works. Surprisingly I have another gmail account which works.

6) Malwarebytes ran and found issues which it quarantined. However I am not convinced that it has been able to fully clean up the system.

7) Super antispyware found a trojan generic which was cleaned it claimed. I have attached a screenshot of that.

8) However my Super antispyware could not be updated as it popped a warning that the firewall is blocking the program.

9) My resident Sophos antivirus console is all grayed out and it won't update Sophos antivirus.

Please help!!

Thanks so much in advance.

P.S. I was meaning to attach some screenshots and HJT log but didn't find any attach file option.

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=====================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Hi,

thanks for your reply..

1) Securitycheck.exe merely generated a one line log. Is that good?

The scan did take about 30 minutes.

notcheckup25.txt
``````````End of Log````````````
2) Updated MBAM and ran a fresh quick scan.
It reported 4 issues. I also found three new files (from the time stamps of the files) under C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Do you think they came from the update? or are these some unknown files? The names are unins000.dat, unins000.msg, unins000.exe?
Securitycheck.exe merely generated a one line log. Is that good?
No, but let's leave it for now.
Your MBAM log says "No action taken".
Please, re-run it, FIX all issues and post new log.
Also...
Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".
The False windows Firewall and Missing antivirus alerts are still there.
It may be not false since Sophos seems to be disabled.
Did Sophos come with AV and a firewall, or just AV?
Try to reinstall Sophos.
Av only...
I don't show a way to attach anything to my posts here, otherwise could have showed you how the Sophos Control center looks.
Here are the attachments.
I think it might be the registry values causing this..
http://www.filedropper.com/sophosantiviruscontrol
http://www.filedropper.com/sophosregistryentries
http://www.filedropper.com/securitycenterregistryeditor
Are all of these set correctly?
Did you try to reinstall Sophos?
Are you having any problems with turning Windows firewall on?
Yes I tried reinstalling Sophos but even with the new instal it wont update or enable scan.
Auto Update would fail every time.
Fire wall is ON but automatic windows updates and antivirus definition shows OFF and won't let me turn it on.
I think, I need to send you "upstairs".
With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread.
It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!
New MRL topic at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic408366.html/page__p__2325303#entry2325303 .
Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the logs you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.
From this point on, the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.
Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Now that your log is posted and you are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another Malware Removal Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.
To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
Louis
