Should Chrome browser be tried on this machine or not, based on the system requirements, specifically the processor, as described in the page here: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=95411
?

That article says, Pentium 4 or later processor required. This machine has Celeron 2.4 GHz, with Windows XP service pack 3. Should Chrome be expected to work well or work badly on this machine?

It will work as well as any other application will. Slow hardware is just that, slow hardware. Google Chrome will certainly run, but will be limited in terms of speed by the aging processor.
