I have a \\.\globalroot\Device\svchost.exe\svchost.exe virus and I need someone to help me remove it.
I have ran Avast!, AVG, Search and Destroy, MBAM, McAfee, Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, Malicious Spyware Removal Tool, and Avira Antivir, and RKill.
Every single program except Antivir and RKill have shut down as soon as I've started the scan and then when I tried reopening I receive an error.
AntiVir didn't shut down immediately, but it didn't locate the virus. RKill located the virus and removed it, but I would then run RKill again, and the virus would appear again.
Can someone please help me remove this virus. Also, when I click on a link from google, I get redirected to another page, I don't know if that's another virus or the \\.\globalroot\Device\svchost.exe\svchost.exe virus itself. Please & Thank you.
I am running Windows XP Professional SP3

Welcome aboard Posted Image

rKill won't remove anything. It just stops some processes, which may interfere with your scans.

Run rKill first and then try to run MBAM immediately after that.
If normal mode still gives you some issues, run both tools from safe mode.
If successful, post MBAM log.

I tried it in Safe Mode & normal mode. It still won't work. The process just starts back up and closes MBAM.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

discard this post, I double posted by mistake. The scan log is the post after this one.

OK, we're dealing here with infected system file (redbook.sys).
Some tools not permitted in this forum will have to used.

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!

Why and what kind of backup? Just files, or HDD image?
Thinking about reinstalling Windows?

I'm reading the link to the post you gave me, and it just says

Backup your data!

Regardless of whether or not you have a malware infection, routinely backing up your data should be an important part of every computer users life. Whether it be a hard drive that has failed or malware that has caused your computer to become inoperable, not having your files, pictures, email, and music can be a disaster. We therefore suggest that before we move forward with this cleaning process, you first backup your data to a secure location. That secure location could be a burnable DVD, an external backup drive, or another computer. I have listed free backup software that you can use below:

Cobian Backup
DriveImage XML
Microsoft Backup for XP
Vista Complete PC Backup

I'm not sure exactly what they're talking about. if it's important files only or what?

We already established, that your computer is infected, so creating an image of your drive, like by using DriveImage XML is not recommended, because the image would be infected as well.
In your case I suggest to simply manually backup your important files (documents, pictures, etc.)
Keep in mind, that when your computer will be eventually declared clean, you'll have scan all those backed up files to make sure they're clean.
