I have been getting an error message when trying to run the automatic update for Windows XP Pro. The update is for Windows Installer 3.1 and although it looks as if it is installing, when it gets to the end is states that it failed. I am asked to restart the computer whicj I do. After restarting, I get a message that the machine needs to be restarted again. I have turned off the firewall and disabled my anti virus for the process with any success. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi PhilR714,

Try this...

Place you XP CD in the cd drive.
Click on the Start button and then click on the Run option.
In the Open field type sfc /scannow and press the OK button.
Follow the prompts through the scan and when it prompts you to reboot, do so.
Test to see if the problem is resolved.

Good luck,

Rigel

Rigel,
Thanks for the advice. I tried it but unfortunatly it did not help. If you can think of anything else I would be happy to try it.

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
