Hi,

Before I post my log, I'd just like to say how great I think it is that sites like this exist to help users like me! Thank you very much!

Basically, this is my grandparents computer that I'm on. They have a problem whereby they'll search something in google/yahoo (on firefox), and clicking on a link will open a new tab with a 'google' window. But the google window has the URL of something along the lines of 'park media . com '. Note the page looks just like google, infact the google links have the URL of real google links.

There is also a problem whereby clicking on some links will immediately open a new window with a 'find file' button, this looks like a normal button.

Unfortunately my grandparents are quite gullible with links like this, and will have just clicked on them, thinking they were doing the right thing. It is part of my summer job to try and enlighten them as to how to use the internet safely and without causing this type of thing to occur again. They have avast installed, and originally I did an avast check, and a malware bytes check.

btw. You'll note that I installed 'Hijack this', this was for another forum. I did not create a post on another forum, and only installed hijack this as I'd previously had to use it to help another relative (asking for advice on a different forum). Obviously, as you don't ask for this I have not provided it, but if you do wish, I have the HijackThis log as well.

Hopefully you guys will be able to help, I thank you very much in advance.

Best Regards,

Mark

Observations:

My grandparents have a very old version of iTunes installed, which i have now uninstalled. However, following startup and logon, Avast is popping up asking to open ipod/itunes something in Sandbox. I will try and write down the next time I log onto the computer and post it below for you, just incase it helps.

My grandparents don't have an ipod so can't quite work out why they would have itunes installed!!!

Best Regards,

Mark

Deleting iTunes appears to have solved that particular problem.

Also just noticed, upon clicking on a link, the browser appears to be opening a window wiht websites such as www.google-analytics.com etc.

Their firefox browser is quite out of date, I won't update it until you ask to though.

we are going to check the router

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: Posted Image <--XP

Hello

Yes it looks like the DNS settings on the router have been changed.

After you have run these steps - you need to let me know how the computer is doing

Resetting Router

  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

flush the DNS:

Now lets flush the DNS on the computer:

  • click on Start
  • select run
  • enter cmd and hit enter
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:

    ipconfig /flushdns

Now lets check the router again

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: Posted Image <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results

Results are below. My grandparents do not have a router, they have a modem. The modem does not have a reset button on it.

I turned the modem off, and went through the internet providers reset program (wait 30 seconds etc.)

I then completed the rest of the steps as you indicated. If I am missing something please advise.

The problem still persists. Upon clicking on a link on Google, a new tab opens, with the same guise as Google, but instead with th URL of (for example) www.parkmedia.net

Best regards,

Mark

The problem appears to be solved!

It's working correctly as a web browser, the PC is still relatively slow, but that could be due to its age.

Are there any other things that you would advise to remove or change?

I ran the router.bat file again and the following results:

If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Hey,

When trying to uninstall 'desktop uninstall', I got the message 'an error occured whilst trying to uninstall selected item. This item may have already been removed from system, remove from add/remove programs list?' then the option 'yes or no'.

Java stated it was already up to date. It is set to automatically do this, so it may have updated since a previous log?

TFC took a while to remove, but appeared to remove a lot of temp files.

The logs are below. Hopefully the hijackthis one is ok. Your instructions didn't appear to correspond to the program I had installed previously? Perhapos a different version?

Computer is just running slowly, still! Could be its age though!!

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD06] c:\Program Files\HP\{AAC4FC36-8F89-4587-8DD3-EBC57C83374D}\hphupd06.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon06] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon06.exe

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

:DeFogger:

  • To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

:Uninstall ComboFix:

  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Posted Image

:remove tools:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. :Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:

  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often.
