Hello!

I had computer troubles about a year and a half ago, malware that I have seen dubbed "the redirect virus", and the wonderful people at bleepingcomputer helped me correct it (old topic is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic279940.html ). Now I am having the same problems again. I tried running Combofix, AVG, Symantec, and Stinger, and while they seem to have found and corrected problems, I am still having the same symptoms.

Should I just go through the same steps I went through a year and a half ago?

Also, is it possible to tell where this malware came from so that I can prevent this from happening again?

Just to reiterate the symptoms: after I've searched for something on Google, I click on a result and 25% of the time it redirects me to a different site (yellowpages, shopica, etc.). One time after this had been happening, Windows Defender also appeared, which I think could be linked to that. (My anti-virus programs took care of Defender, but not the redirects). There are also occasional popups that appear when I am not even clicking on anything, such as "Congratulations! You are today's winner! What is your name and cell number?"

Thanks in advance; you guys are awesome!

-Mike

Hello.

ComboFix (CF for short) is intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for personal, unsupervised use. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer. When CF is run without trained assistance, it can no longer be considered a "safe" tool. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

***************************************************

Please follow the instructions in This Guide starting at Step 6.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to try to resolve them.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Since you have run Combofix, you will need to post that log in your new topic as well. It is located at C:\ComboFix.txt
