I am trying to add registry vaslues that apparently are missing and hopefully are the cause of my loss of Windows system sounds, no audio from flash video and no volume control icon in the lower right tray. Here is the original thread regarding this issue: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic402881.html/page__p__2285777__fromsearch__1#entry2285777.
I already reinstalled the newer version of the driver with no change in the problem. Here are 2 fixes that I am trying:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/youtube-dailymotion-google-video-flash-games-and-applications-no-sound-and-audio-in-windows/
http://www.codecs.com/forum/index.php/topic/50-help-with-k-lite-codec-pack/

PROBLEM: I apparently don't know how to edit the registry, I have created a text file and renamed it with an .reg extension and both dbl clicked the new registry entries file and tried importing it with the editor. In both cases it says the new values were successfully added but when I look (even after a reboot) they aren't there, the drivers32 key folder is empty. Nor do I understand how to manually type them in. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to be log in as an administrator? My user account already has admin privileges.

I have attached the text file

Also, if an edit causes problems how can it be undone? Will a system restore reverse it or an F8/last good configuration?

Thnaks for any suggestions

Back up your registry first with ERUNT or program of your choice, if you ever make changes in the registry.

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Might be the permissions required.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]

Right click on drivers32 folder in the registry, select permissions and check that under 'Allow' there is a tick for 'Full Control' and 'Read' - greyed out.

Your file only contains a few entries - is that the 'FixNoFlashSound.reg' - (I don't want to download it).

The folder (on my computer) contains considerably more entries. I also run XP Home, SP3.

I wouldn't rely solely on system restore, or Last Good Configuration, but that's my view.

Pete, thanks for your reply, take a look at this link, does this look more like the number of entries in your drivers32 key?

Hi

I did look at that link when it was first posted, thinking that it was more along the lines of my own entries, although there will be some differences. A .reg file based on those 60 or so entries is necessary, IMO. (54 entries in my drivers32 registry folder).

(Manually creating so many entries is a pain in the backside, believe me).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can only tell you what's in my registry. I don't know if making changes will have any effect, particularly as your 'Everyone' entry has full control and I was under the impression that this would override everything else.

I have no 'DENY' entries ticked anywhere.

Administrators: Allow 'Full Control and 'Read' (only these 2 are ticked)
Creator Owner: Allow 'Special Permissions' (only this 1 is ticked)

If you decide to make any changes, Backup the registry first and if you use ERUNT, tick the three items, 'system registry', 'current user registry' and 'other open user registries', to make a full backup.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, 'How to set or change registry editing permissions in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003':

--------------------------------------------------

BTW, re my previous comment concerning system restore, I always backup my registry AND create a restore point; I would not just rely on SR to get me out of trouble.

:busy:

You can get into system restore by booting into "Safe Mode" (F8 at start up) then go to "Start > Run" and type "msconfig". Click on "System Restore" the choose a date when you know your computer was running good.
