So my laptop died, (motherboard) and i recently bought a HDD to usb cable so i can retrieve all my files.

Plugged the device in and it shows all my files on the HDD, problem is when i try to access, my user under the documents and settings folder it gives me a denial warning of something like. "ACCESS IS DENIED, USER UNKNOWN" or something close to that. I know i had a user name and password on it so is that my issue.

how can i get around this or be able to gain access to my files?

You need to take ownership. The method varies with the OS you are using. If W7 or Vista here's the best way: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
