I have windows XP laptop and think that it is infected. I had MS Security essential and McAfee both and was primarly using MS Essential. MS essential stopped working and even after re-installation, it does not come up. When I start it, it will usually come up for fraction of second and may show red sign in the tray but does not show up on the screen. When I start is in safe mode, it will say that it is not protecting the system and could not start there as well even if I want to enable it. Also, when I opened "Security Center" in control panel, it says that security center services is not enabled. I tried to do it through services but it will run only for few seconds and automatically get disabled. I even tried to reinstall MS Security essential but it does not work. Finally, when I serach something in Google, clicking directly the search link will redirect but if I copy paste in a different page, it works. Please help!!

Thanks.

Edit:
Just wanted to add that I ran MBAM and did not find any infections and now running SAS in safe mode though I did not find anything even with this when I ran it earlier (again in safe mode). Thanks and looking forward to be helped.

After reading some of the recent posts from others about google redirect, I tried downloading TDSS killer. For some reason, the page with TDSS killer on Kaspersky does not want to open. The connection for that page times out. Any suggestions? Please help.

It may be busy,,, try again and post the log.
A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Did SAS find anything other than tracking cookies?

Hi, I think we need to Reset the HOSTS file
As this infection also changes your Windows HOSTS file, we want to replace this file with the default version for your operating system.
Some types of malware will alter the HOSTS file as part of its infection. Please follow the instructions provided in How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

To reset the hosts file automatically,go HERE click the Posted Image button. Then just follow the prompts in the Fix it wizard.

OR
Click Run in the File Download dialog box or save MicrosoftFixit50267.msi to your Desktop and double-click on it to run. Then just follow the promots in the Fix it wizard.

Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select Quick scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Please ask any needed questions, post logs and Let us know how the PC is running now.

You're welcome!!

I tried Fixit in safe mode but it did not work so did it in normal mode. It ran and asked to reboot. After reboot, I updated and ran MBAM in normal mode but it did not find anything to remove. Also, I still see that the "Security Center" services is disabled. In fact, I can start is but within few seconds, it disables it. Please advise.

Here is the log of MBAM:

Go to Start > Run, type msconfig .. hit Enter
In the window that opens click the Startup tab, make sure there is a check mark in the box for your anti-virus (security tools) and/or firewall, click Apply, click OK
Restart your computer.

Just wanted to update that this morning, I did the following:

- disconnected internet on infected system.
- uninstalled both MBAM and SAP while in safe mode,
- downloaded the exe file for MBAM and SAP programs on a fresh system,
- copied them on the infected system and installed them again and connected internet only while update was asked during installation of these programs.
- while staying in safe mode and disconnected from internet, I ran MBAM with quick scan and got nothing.
- then ran SAS with full scan in safe mode and disconnected from internet and got C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\COLBACTP.DLL as a Trojan.Agent which is now quarantined.
- then I opened services.msc and enabled security center but it did not start because of safe mode I think.
- restarted the system in normal mode and I was able to see that security center is enabled.

I am going to run MBAM's full scan again in safe mode and see if I find anything. I would like to confirm that the system is clean. Please let me know what all is needed to confirm the same. Also, can I remove the infected file from quarantined folder? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Ran MBAM's full scan and did not find anything. Since I had removed MS Security Essential, I downloaded it again from MS website, installed, and did a full scan. That also did not give anything.

Ok looks real good.. We will do an online scan and be sure nothong is left. After that you can remove the items you want to.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

Finished scanning and nothing was found. Only suspicion I have right now is the beep I hear after restarting the system and when it shows the user accounts for login. I never had this sound coming before so not sure about it. Any word of advice? Thanks for your time again.
