Last Thursday I somehow got infected with a trojan virus that hid all my files, folders & programs. It loaded the scareware Windows Vista Repair program. Also, sporatically there's some audio advertisement/newscasts playing in the background, along with browser redirects. I've tried the removal guide from here, but I currently cannot get any version of RKill to work. The iExplore version of RKill worked the first time that was tried, but then we unfortunately misread the instructions and rebooted after running Malwarebytes. :( Now, anytime that we try to load/run any of the versions of RKill, it deletes/hides the programs immediately or when the program is "running" the black window will eventually say "access denied" on the last line. In case you want to see the log of the files from RKill the first time it worked, I'll post them below along with the DDS log. Thank you in advance for your help! This is such a frustrating process and we appreciate your time & help. :)

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Rootkit UnHooker (RkU)
Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.

=================================

I'm still hearing some audio playing (like a video, without the video) in the background at times. Programs/icons are still missing. I did a few internet searches and there weren't any redirects when I did them. Not sure what else to report on at this time.

Hi!

No problem!

Looks like we are dealing with a rootkit infection here among other things.

The sounds you are hearing are from the infection you have.

Please download UnHide.exe by Grinler.

It will unhide folders/files that were set to be hidden by the infection you had.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.24.1 log created on 06272011_125323

-------------------------------------------

okay, a problem I just noticed. I was going to disable my McAfee Securitycenter before running combofix, however now the little icon in the lower right is no longer visible (I ran the unhide.exe prior to the OTL fix, which seems to have made things visible again). I double-clicked the McAfee program icon that was made visible on my desktop again, but everything is greyed out, like it's never been used before. Is this normal...how can I disable my antivirus program before running combofix?

Not sure in regards to McAfee. It's possible that it got corrupt somehow, so we may want to remove it for now, and then re-install it after we get you cleaned up.

Remove McAfee Tool
Please download the McAfee removal tool from HERE
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Make sure all McAfee application windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe and the removal tool will start automatically.
  • Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator.
Once the removal tool is finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. If you choose to restart later, your McAfee product will not be fully removed until you do.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.

yikes, not good...just got a blue screen of death and it's restarted. I ran the McAfee uninstall program, then rebooted pc. All was fine. I right-clicked to run as admin for combofix and clicked I agree as it prompted, then it went to the blue screen...it's just finished rebooting.

edit - I am unaware of any other antivirus programs running on the computer, if that was the problem...

I haven't heard any videos or sounds playing in the background. So, I don't know if that part of the infection has been fixed or not. The annoying little warning boxes that used to come up after I was infected are no longer coming up either, so that's good. All the icons/programs seem good & aren't hiding anymore.

I didn't know if you still wanted me to do the Combofix or not since we did the TDSSKiller action...so I will await your instructions before I reinstall an antivirus software package or do anything else. B)

You rock by the way! :thumbup2:

Hi!

Glad to hear that things are running better!

I'd like to have you run the ComboFix scan, so we can see if anything else is detected.

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

The main infection that you were infected with is called TDL3.

Boy! I feel for y'all...you're very overworked, but you also have to give bad news too. Ugh! I had so hoped I didn't have one of those really bad ones! boo!

I'd like to continue with the clean up please. I guess I can decide later if I want to reformat. I know you probably get this question all the time, but if you were me, would you?

While I was just trying to run the Combofix tool, it had gotten to the autoscan blue screen with the different completed stages (it was up to stage 50 after about 9 minutes of running), when it came up with a Microsoft Windows error window - "pev.cfxxe has stopped working". What should I do?

Hi!

It's unfortunate, but it seems like more and more of the infections that people get these days come with backdoor capabilities.

I'd like to continue with the clean up please. I guess I can decide later if I want to reformat. I know you probably get this question all the time, but if you were me, would you?

Okay. Actually, I don't really get asked this question as often as you'd think I would.

If this were my machine, I'd without a doubt reformat and re-install it.

While I was just trying to run the Combofix tool, it had gotten to the autoscan blue screen with the different completed stages (it was up to stage 50 after about 9 minutes of running), when it came up with a Microsoft Windows error window - "pev.cfxxe has stopped working". What should I do?

Did ComboFix crash or was it still able to run?

I was unsure of what to do, so I told the window to close the program and didn't try to get it to find a solution. I'll run it again in a bit and let you know what happens.
