Hello!

We recently had the Windows Vista Restore virus on our laptop. I followed all instructions here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-restore, but after the unhide.exe successfully ran, I still do not see start menu quick launch icons, the quick launch icons on the taskbar, or the desktop. I've tried reviewing other posts where users are also having this problem, but I am not tech savvy enough to understand the exact issue.

Thank you in advance!

Unfortunately, all links seems to be gone. You have only empty folders.

You'll have to restore all items manually.

You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu and Administrative Tools as follows:

===========================================================================================

To manually recreate "All Programs" entries, follow these steps...

  • Download App Paths
  • Double click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.
  • Keep the program open.

In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.
  • Go Start>All Programs.
  • Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".

Posted Image
NOTE. Make sure, you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder.

  • You'll see this window:

Posted Image

Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.

  • Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.
  • Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".
  • A pop-up window will open:

Posted Image

  • Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy"
  • Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".
  • IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the end
  • Click OK and you're done.

Posted Image

In case, program's link shows as (empty):

Posted Image

  • Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program Files
  • Right click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":

Posted Image

  • Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.
  • Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".
  • You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.

Alternatively....
...you paste that shortcut in:
(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast
(Vista/7) - C:\ProgramData\Start Menu\Programs\Avast

So I need a quick clarification before I follow any steps. It seems like you have two sets of instructions listed here - am I to do both?

The first is to restore the "defaults for the start menu and administrative tools" and the second was to "manually recreate all programs".

My program folders in the start menu (Microsoft Office, iTunes, etc.) are not empty - and I am able to open the programs (Word, Excel, etc.). The only thing I am missing are the recently used or quick start icons in the start menu, the quick launch icons on the taskbar, and the desktop icons/image.

Is that what the 2 sets of instructions above are helping me to replace?

In that case do NOT follow the above steps.

recently used or quick start icons in the start menu

Which ones are missing:

Also, right click on "Start", click "Properties" and make sure, these two are checked:

Frequently used AND pinned are both missing. The two boxes are checked.

Thank you again for your help!

"Frequently" may rebuild themselves after you use computer for a while.
As for pinned, right click on any program, you want to get pinned and click "Pin to Start Menu".

Well that was easy - ha. Pinning to the start menu worked.

How about the quick launch toolbar in the taskbar? I can see that I have it selected to view - and I can tell where it should be located (as there is space next to the start button for it), but there are no links on it.

I am also not sure that all of my desktop icons are showing up.

Actually - all of my desktop icons are there. It's just the quick launch toolbar problem now.

Well - turns out I just needed to open my eyes. I see "add to quick launch" next to the "pin to start menu".

Thank you so much for your help! Our laptop seems to be back to pre-virus condition.
