Following much appreciated advice from Crytodan, this topic is reposted to this Group from :
BleepingComputer.com> Security> Am I infected? What do I do?
with Title : Search URL Redirect and Connections To Mal IP Addresses
URL: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic403358.html/page__p__2289259__fromsearch__1#entry2289259

--------------------------------------

CURRENT SYMPTOMS:

Any search engine page opened in any of my three installed broswers will usually, but with exceptions, connect to rogue URLs when one of the listed seach results is clicked.

And, usually but not always, a browser will comand continuous use of CPUs up tp 100% whether on line or physically disconnected, and regardless of whether the browser window was blank or had content.

When any of my broswers is closed by its [X] close button, the high CPU usage (up to 100%) can continue after the browser window has disappeared for up to more than two minutes. This seems to occure to a greater degree if the PC is disconnected from Internet.

Closing browser application with Process Explorer or Task Manager ends high CPU usage immediately.

Browsers affected: Internet Explorer (IE v8), FireFox (FF v4) and GoogleChrome (GC v12.0.742.100).

MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) blocks intermittent intense bursts of requests to connect to IP addresses it considers to have high risk.
Googling one of those IPs lead me to these forums. For IPs, refer INTRO and MBAM log in my initial topic.

HISTORY:

MBAM has quarantined infections missed by Norton Internnet Security (NIS).
Malware listed as 'Vendor' as:
Highjack.zones
Broken.Open.Command
P.U.M.Disabled.Security.Center

MBAM also found some broken Registry keys.

The infection started immediately after updating FF to v4.01 on 17 May 2011. During the incident, NIS captured some malware named: wrcaosnemx.tmp, ini.exe, inj.exe (Suspicious.Cloud.5) and ink.exe, but left a similarly named concurrently dropped executable named inf.exe, in the C:/Docs&Set/User/Local Settings/Temp folder, which on manual scanning showed OK, but was also submitted to Symantec's Sonar online scan, which returned OK then and still does. It's file properties give its original internal name as parvdm.sys version 6.1.7000.0 (winmain_win7beta.081212-1400). Its quarantined cousins were exported from NIS into an encryted Sonar Activity.mcf file, so as not to confuse any subsequent deep agressive scans. It is realised that the captured malevelents might simply be coincident to, but not associated with the current infection; but on the other hand, they might reveal clues by expert forensic disection.

Cryptodan instructed me to submit logs from DDS and GMER as explained in the guide at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html

Here they are below:

But first, I admit to harmonising my PC 'User' name with my forum name, to hide my shame and embarrassed blushes from having exposed my most treasured of digital tools to the dastardly dirty infamous Internet with only a pretty yellow trojan shield for protection; thus getting it a dose of the nasty networking infection (NNI)!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

  • Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

information and logs:

  • In your next post I need the following

Hello Gringo,

Thank you for offering to take nmy case.

I was just almost about to send all the info, when I accidentally hit CTRL + w instead of typing a 'W'... 'Page Vanished!' Oh dear, and I hope to fix a computer. 'd be etter to get the kid next door to do it.

If I err from your instructions, it'll be becasue of stupid incompetence rather that simple ignorance.

I've run the thre tools klisted, and copy/pasted the logs below. At this instant I'm using a (believed) uninfected machine for communications.

The infection on the sick machine remains unchanged: Browser search page URLs get redirected, and there are spradic attempts by some unknown agent to connect to IP addresses. MalwareBytes (MBAM) has blocked 11 different ones so far, while the firewall in Norton Internet Security (NIS) might need its flames turning up from the default settings to stop even one.

It is realised that the two sets of symptons might be from unrelated malwares.

One program _might_ have been affected by tools run so far. SolidWorks stalls at licence key verification, but can be fixed later.

Here are the logs in order of your list.

With best regards...

Baldie

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Scan with exeHelper:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo,
I have just used Combofix under qualified isntruction on another machine which had a completely different adware infection revealed by MBAM, and which is now resolved. But during its scan, Combofix quarantined a lot of bmp screengrabed image files, which were in a folder together with the source code of the Google web page from the moon eclips Googledoodle series, which I guess might have precipitated the bmp file round-up.

Those quarantined files were spotted in a folder named Qoobox, in their hierarchied folders in C:.

So, before I again allow it free reign to potentially quarantine loads of innocent files (on the affected machine to be disinfected there are thousands of my own webpage files containing javascripts), should I remove them all to a safe place? And, if any files should be false positive identified and quarantined, can they be restored easily by using an application, rather than moving them manually?

I do actually have full back-ups, but don't relish the prospect of having top spend ages figuring out what needs to be recovered and putting it back after the event.

Chris

Hello Gringo,
I've run Combofix and the log has been saved, do you want it as an attachment or copy/pasted into the page reply window?

I ask, because a helper in a recent MABM respose on another machine relating to adware discovery, whanted logs attached as an 'attachment' and your instruction says _don't attach reports unless instructed to do so_.

After running Combofix, the machine still works, but I haven't tried many programs.

However, the problem of redirect/hijack from browser search page persists. I do the same simple search check each time. This time it redirected to yet another different wrong page instead of arriving at a Wikipedia page. I've saved a couple of screen grabs for reference. When I try to copy the mallicious redirect URL from the browser window, it pastes only as 'co.uk'. So far, it is early yet, I haven't seem MBAM block any outgoing IPs.

A problem occured when running Combofix. It kept telling me that Norton Internet security (NIS) was still active, even though I had closed every option and even after using SysInternals ProcessExplorer to kill both NIS listed processes. Suspending them didn't prevent the alerts either. I eventually instructed Combofix to proceed at the alert.

The machine rebooted and the log looks complete at size 30KB.

Should I send it as an attachment or copy/pasted?

hello Gringo,

Observations:
There have not been any noticeable changes in the machine since posting my last message, except that another search test just done with IE instead of FF, gave similar hijacked behaviour as FF and this time MalwareBytes (MBAM) blocked an IP 67.29.139.153 (Type: outgoing), which has previously beenout)stopped a few days ago.

When the outgoing was stopped, the address bar only showed 'http://www.' in grey font followed by 'co.uk' in black font.
The browser test is to search for 'hgv' (heavy goods vehicle).
While doing this note, the browser bar changed to 'http://www.' in grey font followed by goingonearth.com in black font followed by /search.php?q=hgv in grey font, and that's where its stopped with blank window.

In IE Temp Internet folder, the search URL for Google is follwed by a few images, three cookies and an URL http:(//)(www).goingonearth.comsearch.php?q=hgv
then a favicon link to goingonearth (my abreviation will be GOEcom) then a cookie 'my name'@64.111.211.171/
then some images,
then a txt file and two aspx files with URLs featuring: http:(//)onlinestores(dot)metaservices(dot)microsoft(dot)com(/)serviceswitching/
then an url to wmp(dot)music(dot)com

The text file has an URL that starts 'cookie' and its contents contain this string:
onlinestores(dot)metaservices(dot)microsoft(dot)com(/)serviceswitching/ preceded and followed by numbers, ending in an asterix (*)

Well, that's the observations for what they may be worth, here's Combofix's log:

I was going to anonomise the names, but thought 'what the heck does it matter, it might get in the way of fixing the problem'.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hello Gringo,
Sunday was a dayy off computers, well mostly, I repaired an old lawnmower instead.

I'm new to using forums in general, and have always expected to pay for help services received, where they were not covered by a product purchase contract. Do you or Bleepingcomputers expect any recompences for all your time devoted to these activities? Please advise.

Latest Scan actoion:

After just running TDSSKiller, I tested IE, FF and GC with same test search term 'hgv' in Google and Altavista. At this juncture, the browser page malicious redirecting issue has not repeated; the correct page was pulled.

Also, there have been no outgoing attempts to black listed IPs blocked by MBAM, which continues the observed behaviour after Combofix.

Here's TDSSKiller's log:

Hello

Do you or Bleepingcomputers expect any recompences for all your time devoted to these activities? Please advise.

Do we expect any recompences - No we don't - but if you want to help we do eccept donations and I will give you the link when we are complete

How many times did you run TDSSKiller?

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo,

Thanks for the detailed scrutiny.

As far as I know, TDSSKiller has only run once; once ever in fact, not even ever on another machine.

There is only one TDSSKiller log file in C: (I immediately saved a security copy to the 'issue folder' from the one that appeared on screen, just in case one hadn't actually been 'laid' in C:) concurrent to its display.)

This is a brief reply with a question, because that's quite a list of things to do, and tomorrow's comitted to other things.

I might not be aware of all the programs that might be P2P capable. So, my question is: please could you list which programs you have in mind. It could be that they are no longer of use, or simply 'curiosity amusment toys', and I'll remove them forthwith.

Bye for now,,

Baldie
