Hi everyone

It has been a long time since I have been here, but I am having a new problem.

I have been using a pc that I have that I have rarely ever used for online things. I downloaded a demo of Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, and I had to get rid of Norton Antivirus that came with my computer. After I installed Kaspersky I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy.

After restarting my computer, I noticed that my Start menu only has a few programs in it. All of the programs are still on the PC, as I can run the desktop shortcuts and open files just fine, but my start menu shortcuts are missing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance

No, I didn't try that. I thought if I did a system restore that it would bring back the malware that was removed.

I'd try system restore, see, if that solves the issue and then we can run some scans to make sure, your computer is clean.
Don't use Spybot for now though...

System restore is no good. I went to try to restore, and it gave an error that said I had no backups set.

I went ahead and did that, and it only brought back Microsoft Office to the menu, everything else is still missing.

Take ownership of C:\ProgramData folder: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

When done, re-run System Look scan.

It won't finish taking ownership. It goes on for about 30 seconds doing things in the command prompt, and then I get a popup saying Microsoft Windows has stopped responding.

If it helps at all, when I look in the ProgramData folder, there are a few folders, but there is no Start Menu folder in there.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".
