No audio in web browser

Hi there,
i'm having some problems with playing audio files in web browsers.
have tried it with both Chrome and Firefox. the video is playing but there's no audio.
this problem occurs in web browsers only. online radio in WMP and audio files on my laptop works fine.

problem occurs today, suddenly. my volume control button is also missing from my notification area.
i'm using WinXp Professional version 2002 SP3. Acer / IntelŪPentiumŪM / Processor 1.73GHz
i need to restore the audio in my web browsers. pls help! thanks!
