Hi There,

I have been referred to this topic by Cyptodan from this thread here.

I have experienced the Windows XP restore virus and having followed the steps on the windows xp recovery uninstall guide and have now regained control of my task manager and can change my desktop background. The pop ups from my taskbar have stopped but a lot of my files and folders are still hidden.

MBAM still will not update and I am unable to load TDSS (when I double click the timer flashes up and then nothing happens). The error message when I try to update MBAM reads 'An Error occurred. Please report the following error code to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team. Error code: 732 (12007, 0)'

I'm also still experiencing google redirects.

I've tried so restore my computer to a previous save point and get the following error "System Restore is unable to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then run system restore again". I've restarted my computer several times to no avail.

I am also unable to open my computer in safe mode. Whenever I try it will load so far before completely freezing.

I've tried to follow the instructions on the preparation guide as best I could before submitting this post however, I am unable to run dds. I get the black pop up box and this runs so far before my whole laptop freezes, so I'm sorry I couldn't post the required DDS log.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi!

No problem!

Looks like we are dealing with a rootkit infection here.

Which leads me to this warning:

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

Please download UnHide.exe by Grinler.

It will unhide folders/files that were set to be hidden by the infection you had.

NEXT:

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hi ST,

I've followed the instructions in your last post as well as I could. Unhide has unhidden all of my files and folders which is great!

I then followed the steps for OTL, the report is below:

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.24.1 log created on 06252011_110628

Unfortunately, my combofix run didn't go quite as smoothly. It started up and ran for a while before a blue command prompt screen appeared and a .txt document appeared called 'Catchme.txt' which contained the following information:
File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully
File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\volsnap.sys" added successfully

The blue command prompt screen stayed not seeming to do anything for about 20 - 30 minutes and when I went to move the mouse to stop the screen saver the computer froze.

Upon reboot the computer is still experiencing google redirects.

Hi Ellie!

Sorry to hear that you experienced issues with ComboFix. Can you please disable your screensaver, and then run a new scan with ComboFix to see if it will proceed through the scan?

Hi ST,

I've tried combofix again and the blue command prompt screen has appeared. There is no text in the window just an underscore that keeps flashing. It's been doing this for the last 20 minutes - is this normal?

Cheers

Ellie

Give the ComboFix window another 20 minutes or so, and if it's still not working exit out of ComboFix and boot up into Safe mode and try running the ComboFix from there.

If it still won't run for you run this:

OTL Custom Scan

We need to create a new OTL Report
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Click on the NONE button at the top.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    volsnap.sys
    atapi.sys
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • One report will open, copy and paste it in a reply here:
  • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened

Hi ST,

I left the combofix as suggested but in the end the little underscore stopped blinking and my computer became unresponsive.

I tried to boot up my computer in safe mode but it only loads so far before crashing (it's been doing this since the virus hit - it could have been doing this before but I never had a use for it before now).

I ran the OTL scan as you outlined and this is the log:

Hi again,

I've just redownloaded TDSSKiller and it still won't run I'm afraid. When I double click it my screen kind of flickers like it's thought about running it but nothing ever actually happens.

Cheers

Ellie

Do you happen to have access to a USB flash drive?

Hi Ellie,

Okay. I have a strong suspicion that you have a patched system file.

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

Hello,

I've followed the instuctions as above and get as far as the screen where you choose your language. Once i've selected englich it then looks to be booting up but then i recieve the following message:
Could not find ramdisk image: /opt/media/
boot:

This then continues in a never ending cycle. Have I done something wrong?

Sorry to be such a pain!
