Please help. Wife opened an email attachment she shouldn't have (.exe of all things) an now she gets redirects in IE and firefox and and Malwarebytes is constantly blocking attempts to connect do maliscious sites. svhost.exe is usually the one but sometimes when browsing, firefox will be the one trying to access the sites. Its a different site each time and it is just and ip address with no name.

67.29.139.153 on port 56648 just popped up as being blocked.

I also get from time to time a windows massage that says "Host Process Windows service has been stopped...." then It closes before I can finish typing.

My malwarebytes is going to exipre in 2 days so any help you can give in a hurry would be appreciated. I don't mind buying it but I'm afraid to put my credit card information on the net while this is running loose in my machine.

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Posted Image Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • GMER log

mikedan:

Don't worry about MBAM expiring - it's the PRO version features that will expire, not the entire program. The remaining free version will be fine until we have you cleaned up.

Posted Image P2P - I see you have P2P software (BitTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at BC are complete.

Posted Image Download TDSSKiller.zip and extract TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop
  • Execute TDSSKiller.exe by doubleclicking on it.
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected. Important - If there is no option to "Cure" it is critical that you select "Skip"
  • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Once complete, a log will be produced in c:\. It will be named for example, TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_24.07.2010_13.10.52_log.txt
  • Post that log, please.
Posted Image Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If you have trouble, stop and post back. Do not try to repeatedly run comboFix!
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • TDSSKiller log
  • ComboFix log

mikedan:

ESET is flagging your FoxTabAudioConverter as Potentially unwnted. A potentially unwanted application is a program that contains adware, installs toolbars or has other unclear objectives. I'll leave that up to you; if you decide you don't want it, simply uninstall it via Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

Other than that your logs look good. Now I have an update and some very important cleanup for you to take care of:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
  • GMER
  • TDSSKiller
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Posted Image Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Please read this post for some helpful information.
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!

Ran ESET last night and everything is now clean. Also updated to IE9 and latest version of firefox. Since MBAM expired I don't have the its firewall telling me about SVhost accesses to maliscious sites but web browsing shows no signs of redirects.

Is the full version of MBAM the best choice for a internet suite or is there a better choice? what is your recommendation?

A friend of mine sugested that I install windows on a seperate partition so I can dual boot. If rootkit viruses infect the primary boot, jsut boot to the secondary and allow the virus scanners to clean the primary since it looks like a data drive instead of the boot drive.

Does this work?

Thanks for all the help. Donation posted.

mikedan:

You're welcom mikedan and thanks for the donation.

MBAM is an excellent program, but it's not intended to be a standalone security product. With your set-up, I'd keep Microsoft Security Essentials and run MBAM PRO along with it - they work together nicely.

The dual boot scenario your friend recommended wouldn't work against most of the rootkits we are seeing nowadays.

Take care.
