A month or two ago my computer was infected with XP Antispyware 2012. I thought I got rid of it, but then a weaker version of it popped up again just a week ago. I have run many different security programs and it seems to be gone now, but ever since I first had the virus my computer starts up by displaying this:

"Could not load or run 'C:\DOCUM~1\AMANDA~1.JON\LOCALS~1\TEMP\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

My DDS scan shows this:

I heard that if I don't do something about the recurring messages when I turn on my computer about csrss.exe, then it will cause my computer to eventually die. So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

Hi!

No problem!

Do you plan on using Microsoft Security Essentials or Symantec Anti-Virus as your Anti-Virus program?

Back-Up Registry
First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

In response to your question about whether I plan on using Microsoft Security Essentials or Symantec Anti-Virus as my Anti-Virus program, I'm not sure. Would using both of them cause a problem? I think both of them are in use and might have scheduled scans. I am not sure which is better, but I'd probably pick Microsoft Security Essentials over Symantec Anti-Virus. Can you explain why I need to pick one?

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.26.1 log created on 07182011_154335

My computer did restart at the end of the scan, and when it started up again only one of the messages about the csrss.exe problem popped up on my computer's screen.

I did remove both J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 and Skype Toolbars. I have no problem also removing Windows Live Toolbar, but I can't find it on my Add or Remove Programs list. Everything is listed alphabetically and my computer lists Windows Live Essentials, Windows Live Sign-In Assistant, and Windows Live Upload Tool. How can I find the Windows Live Toolbar?

Hi jonesak!

In response to your question about whether I plan on using Microsoft Security Essentials or Symantec Anti-Virus as my Anti-Virus program, I'm not sure. Would using both of them cause a problem?

Of course I can. :)

The following is what a colleague of mine had to say about multiple Anti-Virus programs.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Let me know if you're still unsure about anything or if you need clarification on it. :)

If you're looking to remove Symantec, then I can give you instructions for removing it from your computer. :)

OKay. Thanks for that information.

That's interesting. Lets hold up on trying to remove Windows Live Toolbar for right now.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I have installed the ComboFix program onto my desktop.

I am having trouble figuring out how to disable all my Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications. The only ones that are on my System Tray are Microsoft Security Essentials and Symantec AntiVirus. Right-clicking MSE only allows me to open it while right-clicking Symantec allows me to open it. And faded (so there but not as an option to click on is "Enable Auto Protect" and there's a checkmark next to it.

I also have Hitman Pro 3.5 (which I have no problem removing entirely) and Malwarebytes' AntiMalware (which I can't figure out how to disable). I read the forum you directed me towards, but basically all of the help was specifically for if the programs were on the System Tray.

Please try these instructions for disabling Microsoft Security Essentials; Open MSE -> click Settings and under real-time protection -> uncheck the option Turn ON real-time protection.

Please don't worry about disabling those.

Lets not worry about Norton for right now. Please try to run ComboFix without disabling Norton.

I tried running the ComboFix, but it still is notifying me that I have not disabled Symantec AntiVirus. I would rather use Windows Security Essentials over Symantec, so could you possibly tell me how to uninstall it? Or should I ignore those messages from ComboFix and just proceed running that program?

Hi!

so could you possibly tell me how to uninstall it?

Absolutely!

You should be able to remove Symantec via Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.

After you remove it, you'll also want to run this utility:

Remove Norton Tool

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall Norton.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the Norton Removal Tool for your own version.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one anti-virus program at a time. Having more than one anti-virus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

After you do the above, please then attempt to run ComboFix, and see if it will proceed without giving you warning messages.
