# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.

This seems a little curious since your gateway
is also your dns server. Need to gather some more data !

You say that you lose the dns.
Ok, what symptoms do you see ?

I'd try an ipconfig /release and /renew cycle to see what
effect this has. This will cause the entire relationship
between your router and the desktop to be reinitialized.

Take a look at the router side, usually accessed
as http://your RoutersIP_Address/ with account and password
for the router. There may be something in the log files
there that will provide a clue. You could also try
resetting the router, although it's unlikely that this will
do any better than an ipconfig cycle.

You might try nslookup to see exactly what works as
far as your name server is concerned. A dos window +
nslookup /? will provide basics. You can try setting another
dns server to see if this works any better (4.2.2.2 might be a good one.)
Try looking up some common addresses that you probably
don't have cached (nytimes.com, pricegrabber or some such)
and see how these work.

I know this does not answer the question and says here go get
more stuff, but nothing in the information you've provided
jumps out at me and says "I am it, here I am".
Just hope I didn't walk right by it ;-)

Greetings. May I ask what security products you have installed ? Often third party firewall and antivirus products will deem the DNS server to be the source of a problem and block it. In your case the DNS server is also your gateway router (the router is serving as a DNS Caching server, a common function in home routers). If it gets blocked you lose your connection to the router and the Internet. Resetting the connection may or may not reset the block. It's something to check, anyway.

Your home network (I'm assuming you are Knightsky ?) is set to channel 10 and you have two very strong signals sitting on channel 11, which will interfere with your signal. I'd advise changing to channel 1 on your wireless router. There is only one relatively weak signal on that channel. Stick to channels 1,6, and 11 in any case. If you are on the same channel as someone else your radios will cooperate to share the wireless bandwidth as long as they can hear each other. Radios on adjacent channels just interfere with each other.

Check with HP to make sure you have the latest version of the wireless driver.

Finally, you can try removing your wireless adapter from the device manager and rebooting your machine to let Windows re-add it. This is a general fix that is particularly effective in fixing mystery problems after an infection or removing anti-virus or other security software.

Good Luck !

Try assigning a static dns server of 8.8.8.8 thats a Google dns server that should work regardless of the network. You will need to go into controlled panel and assuming you are in category view select network internet then network sharing. Under active networks, if your wireless is on click on wireless next to connections. When the window opens click properties at the bottom. In the next window you want to select ipv4/TCP/IP. In the general window that appears at the bottom click use the following dns server and enter the address I gave you earlier.
