I am unsure to the full nature of the virus. It hit through a yahoo fluff piece mainpage link. The AV (Avast) did some blocking but it was not enough. The computer was in real rough shape. I eventually recovered and managed to get things back to usable but I am still getting hits off of AV scanners both Avast and F Secure. The only real issue I notice is that there are sometimes failures to boot up on the first try and the clock keeps rolling back an hour.

Any help would be welcome.

I think the logs look okay but we should take a further look

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Open OTL

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:OTL
O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\ShellBrowser: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - No CLSID value found.
O4 - Startup: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Epson all-in-one Registration.lnk = File not found
:reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command]
""=""%1" %*"

Then click the Run Fix button at the top

Let the program run unhindered.

When done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Nothing to worry about there. Run ESET next

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.

I was still getting failures in booting and sometimes a slow turn off.

The Avast issue has been resolved but here is what the F-Secure still found? It offered to clean but I thought to make sure.

F-Secure can clean it. It's basically a copy of malware that has been stored in System Restore. If you were to use system restore it would reinfect but I clear the system restore points at the end of the fix anyway so it wasn't too dangerous.

Booting and shutting down is often slowed down by things other than malware - most times in fact.

Please download ConflictInfo by aommaster to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image

  • Press Posted Image to begin.

  • It shall produce a ConflictInfo.txt on your desktop.

  • Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.

I'm not expecting there to be anything on this log but it's worth checking for these types of conflicts.

I will let F-secure clean that then.

F Secure failed to clean on two tries. It also gave me an extra result that did not clean. The restore I could find on search. Perhaps I could just delete it?

The first file is from a trojan called FakeAlert and needs to go. The system restore one will be removed at the end of this fix so leave it where it is (it's no danger unless you invoke a system restore which you won't, will you?)

Please run Combofix which will rip out any FakeAlert

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications including Firewalls, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Okay, the FakeAlert file is safe in the Avast sandbox.

Please run ESET next

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
If no log is generated that means nothing was found. Please let me know if this happens.
