A friend of mine gave me her used VAIO laptop (5-6 years old); she warned me it was slow. She bought another one for herself.

Indeed it was slow. Programs taking forever to open and close, etc.

I reverted it to its factory origins but it's still just as slow. Maybe slower!
I has Windows Defender as Firewall, Avira free edition for antivirus and the automatic updates are enable. My security center tells me everything is fine.
Operating system Windows XP.

I have never had such a slow computer. It takes forever to do anything; that's why I believe it's infected. My friend NEVER DID anything to maintain it in good working order. In fact it was a "neglected computer" and needs much care now. (hospital stay overdue with backed up ailments! ;-)

I am currently in the process of using a defogger and downloading the DDS tool on this page:
