Greetings! Nice site, great name.

My system is XP. Malware hid most programs, and has removed everything from Quick Start and system tray. Trojan began doing "system scan" and popped up messages regarding disk problems. When I tried to access Task Manager, got message that it had been disabled by Administrator. Finally turned off computer.

Went into Safe Mode with Networking (as Administrator). Ran unhide.exe. Files seem to be okay, but exe shortcuts are gone from start button and task bar. System Restore seems accessible thru Control Panel. Can't access internet, but used handy MP3 player to install gmr and dds. Went to Networking in control panel. I could see my wireless network, but was asked for my password when I told it to connect (awaiting instructions from you on this). No big deal since firewall and Panda are not running in Task Manager). Enabled Windows Firewall, restarted computer to Safe Mode with N/W, but can't see that it is running in Task Mgr (could be a service who's name I don't recognize.)

Backed up selected files. Tempted to use one of your recommended mirror programs but afraid I will transfer virus to my 1TB USB drive.

By the way, this is all pretty interesting, and what you guys are doing is pretty cool. One note, I saw Microsoft Security Essen. was a running process. I'm pretty sure I uninstalled it a while back and replaced with Panda (in retrospect, a mistake?} but it seems I have run into it since.

Update. I now seem to have lost the ability to boot to safe mode. It hangs when it reaches drivers\agp440.sys. I'm going to try to boot up normally, then shut down normally.

Checkdisk took over and repaired a couple of things in the USN journal file record segment. I can now boot to safe mode (administrator is only mode that allows me to save a link to the desktop). By the way, I can now connect to the internet. I'm using IE since I was in FFox when the Virus struck. Also, in Windows Explorer, I can see all of the shortcuts that I used to have on my desktop. They're still located in the desktop file (documents & settings/user etc).

One other note: Many years ago I installed something on this machine that cleared the cache (and perhaps all temp files) when I shut down or restarted it. The only negative is that it takes ten minutes to restart. I don't think it was a standard installation, but instead may be something done in DOS. Any suggestions where to look for this program? I think I'd like to get rid of it.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

Hey, ST, hope all is well. In the nine or so days since I posted the problem, I've managed to straighten out ALMOST everthing, so I thought I'd check with you before running Rootkit Unhooker or anything else. Mostly good news. This thread could serve boost the spirits of someone else who got this virus and show them how I got the computer back pretty fast. No important files were lost or damaged. But, there are a couple of issues. Here is my current situation:

Windows XP (Service Pack 3) I used Malwarebytes, uninstalled Panda and installed Avira, I seemed to get rid of most of the problems. The virus was completely removed from my system (or so the two tools said) and I was able to restore a working, clickable desktop (googled "nodesktop" (no space between the o and d) in registry). I unhid icons (including quick start using unhide.exe), and restored the task manager (googled a registry fix). Yeah!

A few problems remain:

1. If I go to Start -> Programs, most of programs identified have "empty" next to it. Unless you have a quick fix, I can insert the shortcuts to the exe files manually. No biggy.

2. If I go to Start -> Programs, there is a slot that says "XP restore". This first appeared when I got the virus. It's still there, but hopefully not functioning. Question: How do I get rid of it? It is not the Restore function that USED TO BE under Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools. That option is now "empty". Next Question: How do I get that back? And if there is no way to do it, how to I begin using system restore again? Also, since everything is running great right now, shouldn't I use system restore to backup my settings before running Unhook? How?

3. When I initially ran MWBytes, it found about ten or fifteen problems. Then Avira found two more. I was so giddy at getting everything back that I ran System Restore (I believe thru the Control Panel.) I think the virus may have been in the restore files, because the machine seemed sluggish and when I ran GMER, three times, the computer rebooted before GMER finished. I ran Avira. Once again, it found and removed the TR/Kazy.438476 from JAR Cache. (I think this is part of the Windows Restore bug) GMER ran okay after Avira removed it. Note: Yesterday I turned off "Monitoring" on all drives to delete any remaining backup files. It's back on now. I think the machine is now clear.

4. Also, the initial run of AVIRA found Java/Fester.D.1 in my Documents and Settings - Applic Data - Sun Deployment etc. This seems to have been removed or quaranteened by Avira. Like I said, everything is running great, BUT, here is the question: should I delete any caches or anything?

Thanks very much for all your help. What do you need me to do?

Hi!

How?

I can remove that XP Restore, I'll need to see the OTL log first though.

In regards to the Systems Tool folder being empty see this:

This is a manual fix for XP users:

1. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\1
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

2. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\2
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

3. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\3
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

4. Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\4
and paste it to this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

If the above does not work then you can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:
For any other missing program shortcuts you will probably need to reinstall the application or manually create new shortcuts.

NEXT:

I'll have a much better idea of where we stand after I can see the Rootkit Unhooker log as well as the OTL logs.

Hi!

Thought I would do a system backup before I attempt to change the user settings. Can I access that through the Control Panel?

If you're talking about a new system restore point, don't worry, a new one will be created when you run the fix below;

If you plan on sticking with Avira then please remove Symantec.

Remove Norton Tool

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall Norton.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the Norton Removal Tool for your own version.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one anti-virus program at a time. Having more than one anti-virus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Regarding Norton: I haven't used it in years and years. I do have two folders with a few files in them dated 2003 & 2004. Folder 1: Symantec. Contents SYMEVENT 81KB (System File), SYMEVENT 1KB (Setup Information), SYMEVENT 7KB (Security Catalogue), SYMEVENT1.DLL 82KB (Application Extension). Folder 2: SymNetDrv. Contents SNDMon 94kb (Application)

Nothing's running in the task manager and there's nothing in Add/Remove Programs. The Remove Norton link you sent says you need a product key to use the files or you should "upgrade" then uninstall. Maybe I can just delete the folders? Awaiting instructions.

Re: OTL fix. I'll run that in the next ten minutes unless I hear from you that I first must dispose of Norton (I never liked Norton).

Okay. Thanks for that information. I'll manually remove Norton for you later on. I can see that it's left some files over.

Something else you should know: When I got your email a couple of hours ago, I was in the middle of transferring some jpegs from my laptop to the machine in question. Since this was going to take a while, I ran the original OTL and Unhooker scans during the download (which is finished now). I saw WMP54Gv4SVC mentioned in your OTL fix. That svc refers to my wireless network.

Shoot. I got a message that says "Scan's complete". But no okay button, no report. Please tell me I didn't hit "run scan" instead of "run fix". By the way, this all may give the phrase "clean machine" a whole new meaning.

Hi!

No worries. Please attempt to run it again, this time ensuring that you make sure you hit Run Fix.

Then proceed with the ComboFix instructions.
