Examples of my symptoms:
1 - When I boot up the PC; immediately this fake virus scanner starts running and warns me that my harddrive is infected and I have potentially very serious viruses.
2 - My Task Manager was disabled(greyed out) not allowing me to kill any processes.
3 - No icons appears on my desktop.
4 - No files in my Windows Explorer. Made it appear that everything had been deleted.
5 - Initially it blocked me from having access to my c:\ drive
6 - System Restore somehow was compromised so that it fails at step three attempting to restore to an earlier date.
7 - Windows Firewall has been disabled (greyed out) so that I have no control to change the setting from off to on.
etc. etc.
Yes I am the administrator of this PC and access my office through a VPN connection.

I have tried several things, including, running system restore and malwarebytes which found some items that I previously removed before I remembered this website. I was able to change some display settings from hide to unhide to get some of my files to appear. But my PC is still 75% infected and I don't know what else to do.

Here is the contents of the DDS.txt log:

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can downlaod, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Thank you for your post ST. How's the weather in Antartica? :)

Anyway, My PC is runnning prettymuch the same. I have only got the bare minimum running. The system restore still does not work. My run programs menu still show empty. And all my icons on my desktop have not been restored, including MS Office tools and others.

I will now paste the rootkit, OTL, and extras in this post:

Hi!

How's the weather in Antartica?

No problem! I'm glad to be able to assist you! It's pretty chilly here. :)

Can you just confirm that you set these proxies in Internet Explorer?

IE - HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyEnable" = 1
IE - HKU\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = Http://proxy.fnfis.com:8080

IE - HKU\S-1-5-18\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://intranet.fnfis.com/default.aspx
IE - HKU\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyEnable" = 1
IE - HKU\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = Http://proxy.fnfis.com:8080

IE - HKU\S-1-5-19\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://intranet.fnfis.com/default.aspx

IE - HKU\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = Http://proxy.fnfis.com:8080

and in Firefox?

FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.ftp: "proxy.fnfis.com"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.ftp_port: 8080
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.gopher: "proxy.fnfis.com"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.gopher_port: 8080
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.no_proxies_on: "localhost,127.0.0.1"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.share_proxy_settings: true
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.socks: "proxy.fnfis.com"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.socks_port: 8080
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.ssl: "proxy.fnfis.com"
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.ssl_port: 8080
FF - prefs.js..network.proxy.type: 0

Anyway, My PC is runnning prettymuch the same. I have only got the bare minimum running. The system restore still does not work. My run programs menu still show empty. And all my icons on my desktop have not been restored, including MS Office tools and others.

Try this tool:

Please download UnHide.exe by Grinler.

It will unhide folders/files that were set to be hidden by the infection you had.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Thanks for quick reply ST.

Yes those proxies appear to be legit for business.

Unable to complete Combofix because I was unable to disable or turn off McAfee antivirus. Should I click Ok on the ComboFix anyway? This PC controlled by corporate has disabled the to exit the VirusScan or disable it.

antivirus: VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise

Hi!

Don't run ComboFix.

This PC controlled by corporate has disabled the to exit the VirusScan or disable it.

Does the company you work for have it's own IT department/tech support?

I strongly recommend you to ask your IT suppport/network Administrator to fix this. After all they are paid to do so.

I ask this for several reasons:
  • There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware.
  • Any infection could jump terminals in a computer network.
  • There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that I do not wish to deal with.
  • Some people who come here use their computers for work, and the computers may contain the patient records of a physician or the financial records of an accountant's clients or credit card and bank account information of their employer's customers.
  • There may be tremendous risks and legal liability for such users for not fully securing the computer. We will not know this unless we ask. We do not want to be accidentally putting those we help in vulnerable positions for law suits.
  • Business factors outweigh technical factors in making the reformat and reinstall decision. Sometimes friends give missing CDs or lack of expertise as a reason for not doing a reformat and reinstall.
  • The cost of replacing missing Windows XP and MS Office CDs and getting an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer to come in for 3 hours to do the reinstall and apply all the critical updates, is trivial compared with the potential cost of a multi-million dollar lawsuit for breach of trust if confidential client or patient information is disclosed.
  • In specific situations where highly confidential information about others is on the computer, and a backdoor virus or trojan is found, we are helping people more by identifying that they have a backdoor trojan which puts them in a particularly vulnerable situation and sending them to seek local professional help from a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional or Global Information Assurance Certification Certified Security Expert or Certified Computing Professional or Internet Service Provider than we would be trying to fully resolve their problems long distance.

You're going to need to go to them for this, as it's going to be very difficult to do anything without being able to disable McAfee to run some of our tools.
