Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Hi ST and thanks for the warm welcome

No problem re the wait, I'm just glad of some advice - and you guys are great, easy to understand, plain English instructions

But now comes the part where I have to be clear and easily understood - oops!

I've run into difficulties with the OTL scan - I had it running from 9am till 11pm - it looked like it was doing something as the message in the bottom toolbar kept changing - but to be honest I think it just kept restarting.

My laptop has been behaving rather strangely - I found it full of little yellow symantec email proxy boxes stating "your email message to (various Yahoo addresses, and subject lines all of a sexual, spam type nature) was unable to be sent (with various reasons stated, like connection interrupted) looks like someone was trying to send spam emails - is that possible?

Also keep getting what looks like the Windows security centre open and close, leaving an imprint type thing on the task bar - I now have several yellow "!" triangles, green squares and magnifying glasses filling the task bar.

I've had to force shut the computer down - I'll await further instructions.

A really, really big huge Thank you for trying to help me :)

Anne

Hi Anne!

I've run into difficulties with the OTL scan - I had it running from 9am till 11pm - it looked like it was doing something as the message in the bottom toolbar kept changing - but to be honest I think it just kept restarting.

That's interesting. It shouldn't take that long to run.

Yeah, malware could have been using your computer to send out spam.

Also keep getting what looks like the Windows security centre open and close, leaving an imprint type thing on the task bar - I now have several yellow "!" triangles, green squares and magnifying glasses filling the task bar.

We'll have to see if that goes away later.

A really, really big huge Thank you for trying to help me

No problem! I'm glad to be of assistance.

--------------

Were you able to run the RKU scan? If so, please post that log file.

I'd like for you to give OTL another try, but if it takes longer than an hour to run, go ahead and exit out of it and run this tool instead:

Scanning with DDS

Posted Image
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------

Please include the following logs in your thread:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt & Attach.txt reports in your next reply.

Running ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • IMPORTANT - Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the ComboFix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Have I helped you? If you'd like to assist in the fight against malware, click here Posted Image

The instructions seen in this post have been specifically tailored to this user and the issues they are experiencing with their computer. If you think you have a similar problem, please first read this topic, and then begin your own, new thread. I do not offer private support via Private Message.

Hi St - Hope you are well -

Not such good news I'm afraid, following a successful first step, I ran into problems with OTL. I had to keep task manager open so I could stop the synamtec email thing, which was still filling my screen with yellow boxes "scanning mail" and I noticed a couple of times OTL appeared as "not responding" resumed reasonably quickly, without any interference from me - when it came to reboot, it was very slow, and when it finally came back a lot of my desktop icns were either missing or sort of transparent! The strangest thing though was the appearance of ComboFix.exe on my desktop - I don't remember seeing it before, and I definitely didn't get to that step.

Anyway nothing would work, so I tried to reboot again - start menu - restart - all I can get now is a black screen with flashing curser top L

Thanks
Anne

Can you elaborate more on this?

Are you able to boot up successfully and get into Windows?

If so, please proceed with the ComboFix step.

If not, please try this:

Last Known Good Configuration

Start the computer by using the last known good configuration. To start the computer by using the last known good configuration, follow these steps:

  • Restart your computer.
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll to Last Known Good Configuration
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • Go into your usual account

Then try running the ComboFix instructions.

Hi Sorry -

No it won't start at all now - just the black screen F8 didn't do anything, the only thing I can do is get onto the "to interrupt normal start up press the lenovo care button" (Lenovo is the make of my lap top) - which takes me to a startup interrupt menu:

ESC to resume normal startup - takes me back to black screen
F1 to enter BIOS setup utility - takes me to a set up utility
F11 to diagnose hardware or recover your system - when I go into this it just returns me to the black screen again
F12 to chose a temporary startup device - Takes me to a boot menu

Thanks
Anne

Hi!

It's been several days since I last posted instructions for you to complete. Do you still require assistance in getting your computer cleaned up?

Please Note: Unless notified in advance, threads with no response in 3 days get closed.

If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks,
SweetTech.

Hello Again -
Apparently my computer didn't come with any disks - this is the statement in my service and troubleshooting guide!

Restoring factory contents
Instead of providing a recovery disc or windows disk with your computer, Lenovo provides simpler alternative methods of accomplishing the tasks typically associated with these discs. The files and programs for these alternative methods are on your hard disk, which eliminates having to locate misplaced discs and problems associated with using an incorrect disc version.

The complete backup of all the files and programs that Lenovo preinstalled on your computer resides in a hidden protected area, or partition, of the hard disk space. Therefore, when checking the capacity of your hard disk according to Windows, you might note that the total capacity of the disk appears to be smaller than anticipated. This discrepancy is explained by the contents of the hidden partition.

The product recovery program contained within this area enables you to restore the complete contents of your hard disk to the same state as it was when originally shipped from the factory.

Note: The recovery process might take a couple of hours.

To recover the hard disk to it's original contents, do the following:

Attention: All of the files on the primary hard disk partition (Usually drive C) will be lost in the recovery process. However, before any data is overwritten, you will be given the opportunity to save one or more files to other media.
1. If possible, save all your files and shut down your operating system.
2. Turn off your computer for at least 5 seconds
3. Press the Lenovo care button to turn on the computer and immediately enter the rescue and recovery workspace.
Click Restore your system, select restore my hard drive to the original factory state, and follow the instructions on the screen.

How would you like me to proceed?

Thanks
Anne
